Prepare for the AAALAC Visit in 2023

A team of peers will conduct the AAALAC International site visit and review of the Emory University Animal Care and Use Program during the first third of 2023. While much of the focus will be on the Emory Primate Center and SOM Division of Animal Resources (DAR) and IACUC, laboratories will also be visited, particularly those where surgery and other experimental procedures are done on animals or where animals are held.

What is eDisclose?

eDisclose is a university-wide software system designed to help researchers disclose financial interests and request approval for external activities.

Benefits

eDisclose will modernize Emory’s disclosure software and provide enhanced functionality, an improved user experience, and reduce the triggers for COI disclosure. Researchers will only be required to disclose their financial interests once per year (during the annual certification period) and within 30 days of receiving a new financial interest.

What To Know

The annual certification period is November 17, 2022 - January 18, 2023. If you are planning to submit proposals during period, you must complete your COI disclosure prior to the proposal deadline.

What To Do

1. Get trained! Sign up for eDisclose training on the eDisclose SharePoint site.
2. Complete your Disclosure Profile in eDisclose between November 17, 2022, and January 18, 2023. If you are planning to submit proposals during this period, please complete your Disclosure Profile as far in advance of the proposal deadline as possible.

International Shipping - Your Questions Answered
I am shipping or transferring an item internationally. What do I need to know? 

  • You may need an export license before shipping.
  • You may need filing of Electronic Export Information before shipment
  • All shipments must have proper and accurate identification, classification, and description of goods, packaging certifications (where applicable), permits (where applicable), and customs declarations. 
I am hand-carrying the item as opposed to sending it by courier. Does that make a difference?

No. Hand-carrying items (material or equipment) does not remove Emory’s or the shipper’s compliance obligations.

Who should I contact for help?

Depending on the shipment, ORA operational units must review, approve, provide guidance, and/or be notified before the shipment is done.
 


  • Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) for the transfer of tangible research materials (mice, plasmids, human tissue specimens, cell lines, reagents, compounds, etc.) in connection with basic research.

  • Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO)'s Kalpana Rengarajan for all infectious agents, biological materials, and dry ice shipments.

Changes to the Responsible Conduct of Research Training Requirements
As of September 25, 2022, NIH has modified its requirement for instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training to include additional topics such as training in safe research environments, confidentiality and security in peer review, and recordkeeping practices, among others. Please note that online training is not the only acceptable method for training.

Through the CHIPS and Science Act, the National Science Foundation will require training for faculty and other senior personnel that should include “mentor training and mentorship, training to raise awareness of potential research security threats; and Federal export control, disclosure, and reporting requirements.”

The Office of Research Integrity and Compliance has created an online training that can supplement NIH and fulfill NSF and NIFA (National Institute of Food and Agriculture) training requirements. You can access it via the ELMS system by searching " RCR-Online_course“ under “Find Learning”. Find more information in Notice NOT-OD-22-055 and under the CHIPS Act and Science Bill Text.

Research Security Regulatory Updates
NSMP-33 and Persistent Identifiers

Emory will use ORCID ID to fulfill the requirement of persistent identifiers. You can find information about creating yours on the Emory library page. More information about the NSMP-33 directive and requirements can be found here under NSPM-33

What you need to do:

If you’re a faculty member, staff member, post-doc, or graduate student involved in research and would like more information about or help with ORCID, visit the Emory Libraries ORCID guide. The ORCID organization also has robust support available for researchers.
Important! To connect your ORCID ID to Emory, visit Emory’s ORCID ID Connect website for instructions. This site will also allow you to register for an ORCID ID if you do not already have one.

New Requirements for NIH Data Sharing

Beginning in 2023, the NIH will require all grant applications or renewals that generate scientific data to include a robust and detailed plan for data sharing and management during the entire funding period. This information will need to be provided in a data management and sharing plan (known as a DMSP). Find more information on our website about our collaboration with the Emory library to assist researchers with this new requirement.
