SCSOS Community Update: March 2022

A Message from Superintendent Reusser

Moving into a new month, Sutter County Superintendent of Schools has much to celebrate.

As a team, we have successfully returned several students to Shady Creek Outdoor School and Event Center. Many students are feeling the excitement and joy we were eager to bring back to them after closing the school's doors for almost two years. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this dream a reality.

We are continuing to expand our programs where we get the chance. For Sutter County Adult Education, that means adding a new English as a Second Language course: English for Jobs and Careers. We are also in the process of bringing Cosmetology to Tri-County ROP and we are always working to get our Culinary food truck to events in order to help our students gain the most experience possible.

Meanwhile, the governor has announced that beginning Friday, March 11th at 11:59pm, students across California will no longer need to wear masks to school. Although this has been a hot topic among our students, families and beyond, all we want is what is best for our students. We want them feeling safe and encouraged to do their best.

So thank you, to each and every one of you reading this. It's because of you that Sutter County Superintendent of Schools is as successful as it is, in doing what's best for students. Keep it up!

Shady Creek Outdoor School and Event Center

Student Letters

We have so many amazing students that are attending Shady Creek this year, check out just a few of the many letters director Christopher Little and his staff receive at the end of each week. These letters are from 6th graders at Corning Unified.

Sutter Buttes Swimming

Check out Sutter Buttes Swimming! It's a great opportunity for kids in town. The Appeal Democrat highlighted the program, read more from their article below:

"The last thing you may expect to see on a frigid Thursday night is a group of swimmers doing laps during a time when most of us would rather be cuddled up at home on the couch.

As Gauche Aquatic Park in Yuba City lays somewhat dormant until the screams and laughter of children are heard again when seasonably warmer weather is firmly entrenched, Sutter Buttes Swimming is pushing its young athletes to not only stay in shape but also prepare for upcoming events in the weeks and months ahead. But don’t worry, the pool is heated.

This nonprofit swimming club is the work of Eric Pomeroy, assistant superintendent for career and college readiness for the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools. A former high school swimmer himself, Pomeroy said he became involved with the idea of starting a new local swim team after a former longtime club shut down and his children began to show interest in the sport.

New Adult Education ESL Course

ESL instructor Jesse Golden will be teaching this course Mondays and Wednesdays. If you know anyone who may benefit from this program, please spread the word!

Mask Mandate Lifting for California Schools

Gov. Newsom issued a statement Monday that masks will now be optional indoors for most places, including schools. For more information, visit the governor's website.

Marysville's 142nd Bok Kai Festival

ATP, Behavioral Health and Live Oak High School culinary students will be serving Orange Chicken and Fried Rice at the Bok Kai Festival Saturday March 5^th from 10am-4pm. Come out Saturday to support our students! As always, all proceeds go towards future culinary students.

Sutter County Superintendent of Schools will be hosting the Sutter County Spelling Bee Wednesday, March 23 at 9am in Boyd Hall! This is an exciting opportunity for our students. The winner of this spelling bee will move forward to the state competition in San Joaquin County May 15!
