Laurelyn Dossett

Laurelyn Dossett, NC Senate District 31

Hello, Forsyth County Democrats! I am running for NC SD 31, in Stokes and much of Forsyth County. I live in Stokes now; I lived in Forsyth for years. I am a songwriter, a small business owner, a mental health professional, a social justice advocate, and a friend and neighbor just like you all are. I have raised three daughters, cared for my mother in her final years, and now have the joy of a new grandson.

I am running for many reasons, most immediately in answer to Governor Cooper’s request of me to help end the Republican supermajority in our state legislature. This is a time of both great turmoil and great hope in our state, and we need to work now to make hope prevail. At the most fundamental level, I believe we are all in this together, that there is no “us” and “them,” that there is no room for discrimination of any kind, and that we need to leave our beautiful community and state better than we found it.

Specifically, I will work for:

  • Children, classrooms, fully funded schools and competitive teacher pay
  • Restoration and protection of reproductive rights for North Carolina’s women
  • Affordable and accessible health care for all
  • Defense of our land, water and people
  • Promotion of an affordable, sustainable, job-creating economy

I am excited about this race and hopeful for our future together. I promise I will give this endeavor my all, and I will be honored to get your vote.

Paul Lowe Jr.

Paul Lowe Jr., NC Senate District 32

Senator Paul Lowe Jr. has served in the North Carolina Senate representing District 32 since 2015. Senator Lowe has been fighting for civil rights, fair pay, affordable healthcare, and equitable funding for public schools during his tenure, to name a few. Service to community has always been first, from the pulpit of the historic Shiloh Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, where he has been a pastor for over two decades, to the chamber of the North Carolina Senate. Senator Lowe feels undeterred by the current position of Republicans in the House and Senate. He is confident in his experience and relationships across the aisle to effect progressive change for all North Carolinians.

As a long-standing civil rights organizer and scholar, he has seen the highs and lows of advancing democracy at the national and local level. Having said experience best positions him to lead us back to majority control in 2024! Senator Lowe is asking not only for the support of voters from District 32, he also is asking them to believe in him, trust him, and hold him accountable for another term.

Amy Taylor North

Amy Taylor North, NC House District 74

Intelligence is powerful. Creativity is genius.

I’m the mother of two amazing boys raised in Lewisville/Clemmons, NC. I’ve been a small business owner, healthcare editor, and energetic, innovative, Forsyth County volunteer for 20 years. Our rescue dog is Sunshine!

Running for NC House District 74 (Clemmons, Lewisville, Pfafftown, Bethania, Tobaccoville & a bit of W-S) is an extension of my public service journey. The NC HOUSE supermajority must be broken to restore and defend the rights of ALL. And we can do it.

I’ve invested in Forsyth schools, government, nonprofits, community centers, the Party, candidates, women artists, women-owned businesses, LGBTQ awareness, historic preservation, local culture, and hosted a refugee family seeking asylum.

Time to Do.MORE.Good.

Politics became personal in 2018, when a qualified woman didn’t become president, and a destructive force did. “We glorify the past when the future dries up. But I believe in LOVE.” - God, U2

Time to DO.MORE.GOOD.

In defiance, I volunteered full time for 1.5 years as my American duty for a David/Goliath congressional race with DD Adams. Best thing I ever did. I learned, knocked, listened, earned trust, built networks, worked election polls, while working another job, as a single mom.

People, leaders asked me to run then.

I have fewer rights now than ever.

Time to Do.More.Good. Time to RUN.

I’ve seen good, and good people working hard, but too many families and businesses are suffering. We can do more, and better.

Let’s get CREATIVE and Do.More.Good.

Mack Wilder

Mack Wilder, NC House District 74

The Marine Corp taught me that you are only as strong as your weakest link. I feel that the same holds true with society. I believe there is a sector of our society that feels as though they haven’t been heard, their situation is hopeless; they don’t have voice. I want to be their voice. I want to listen to their concerns. I want to make their lives better in some way shape or form. I have been doing that all my life scrubbing pots and pans serving the homeless and hungry at Samaritan Ministries, working the free pharmacy and food drives for Crisis Control. Sponsoring children through World Vision, teaching swim lessons for the Red Cross. Donating blood for the past forty years. Serving on church committees and teaching Sunday School. Serving my country as a combat engineer in the United States Marine Corps. I have always answered the call to serve.

If we have learned anything in the last eight or so years, we learned that Republicans can’t govern. How many people died in the last ten years waiting for Medicaid expansion. How many more will die waiting on universal healthcare. I know firsthand what it’s like to lose your job, your healthcare, and have a major medical event. The American dream can’t be save, save, save and hope you don’t get sick. Send me to Raleigh. I will make you proud.

Valerie Brockenbrough

Valerie Brockenbrough, County Commission District B

I believe we need a new generation of leaders with a forward vision for Forsyth. As a mom and an entrepreneur, I’ll bring a fresh perspective to solving the issues facing Forsyth County.

I moved to Winston-Salem with my husband John in 2003. Originally from France, I proudly became an American citizen in 2006. We’re the parents of three amazing kids, two in college here in North Carolina and one still in high school. Our kids attended - and still attend - WS/FC schools, including The Downtown School, Reynolds High School, and Atkins High School.

As an entrepreneur, I've run my own successful business since founding Zoë b Organic in 2005. Today we import dog toys and baby pacifiers made with natural rubber from Spain, Italy, and Mexico.

Over the years, I've been increasingly involved in our local community. In the last ten years, I'm proud to have served as Board president of Piedmont Environmental Alliance and PTA president for The Downtown School. In 2023, I helped start Community for Public Schools, a non-partisan group of parents, educators, and other community members who are passionate about supporting public education. We organized a rally in June 2023 asking our County Commissioners for more funding for our public schools. We also organized a teacher lounge makeover at Carter High School and have been bringing lunch and breakfast to three deserving schools (Carter, Philo Hill Middle, and Easton Elementary) for the 2023/24 school year.

Curtis Fentress

Curtis Fentress, County Commission District B

I am excited to be running for Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. I humbly ask for your vote in the March 5th Primary Election.

Forsyth County is my home. I want to ensure this place is a great place to live, work and play for you, me, our children, and grandchildren. To do that, we need:

1.     A New Generation of Leadership

  • We must elect new leadership accountable to the people of Forsyth County.

2.     Representation of People Over Corporate Interests

  • Our current local government has a history of handouts to corporate interests. Every dollar spent on a corporate tax break or giveaway is a dollar not spent in our public schools.

3.     Resources To Win

  • We have not had a Democrat represent District B in at least 30 years. I commit to you I will raise the resources necessary to win and represent your interests.

I’ve been a Democrat since my mom carried me on her shoulders at a Clinton/Gore rally in 1992. I’ve volunteered on democratic congressional campaigns. I’ve even been an employee of a presidential campaign in the Live Free or Die State. I will represent you with energy, passion and a commitment to the fair treatment of all residents of Forsyth County. Thanks for reading and thanks for your vote!

Kendall Fields

Kendall Fields, County Commission District B

Our current Board of Commissioners includes members who have been entrenched in local government for decades. These individuals are interested in the status quo, and not innovative, progressive solutions to move our community forward and eliminate inequities in education, access to affordable housing and public access to our local government.

I was born in Forsyth County, was educated in Forsyth County, and am now employed by Forsyth County. I've spent most of my life living in this wonderful area of North Carolina and have been privileged to see many perspectives of life across our county. As a graduate of Mount Tabor High School in 2009, I was blessed to have spent the entirety of my K-12 education in WS/FCS schools. After completing my undergraduate and Masters degrees at the University of Tennessee, I was proud to move back to Forsyth County to begin my career as an educator at Parkland High School.

As a young educator, and a lifelong resident of Forsyth County, my candidacy will provide a voice in our local government for the next generation of this community. Spending time living in the Northwest, North, and now South portions of Winston-Salem, I have seen first hand the inequities that exist within this county. I am excited to be running in this election and look forward to working with citizens and community members alike to help push Forsyth County further into the 21st Century.

Marsie West

Marsie West, County Commissioner District B

I have deep roots within Forsyth County, over a decade of town government experience, and a long career in financial services and strategic transformation. I want to use my talents to work with the community to benefit Forsyth County.

I moved here to start my career after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania. I met my husband, Warren, through volunteering at the Little Theatre, and my sons were born here. Our careers took us to Boston, where we settled in Reading. After, we moved to Hong Kong, then traveled the US with Cirque du Soleil. We moved back to Forsyth, where we live across from the family homestead.

I became deeply involved in Reading government serving on Select Board (Vice Chair), Finance Committee (Chair, Vice Chair), Zoning Advisory Board (Chair), and Town Meeting. I directly led community outreach on town finance brainstorming and streamlining zoning regulations.

My key priorities are strong public education, affordable housing, smart economic growth, and transparent government. A strong engagement with the entire community and coordination with local leadership for the city and schools is crucial to solicit and support priorities that will drive our future success. Strong public education is essential to growing our community. The shortage of affordable housing here is widely recognized as an issue and a high priority based on the Forward 2024 survey.

My background in local government and my career in financial services make me an ideal candidate for County Commissioner.

Regina Ford Hall is a native of Winston-Salem, and was educated in Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS). Regina obtained an undergraduate degree in Communication from East Carolina University, a Masters degree in Psychology from Virginia State University, and a Masters of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - School of Government.

She has dedicated her entire professional career to public service. Her work experience includes local government (City of Winston-Salem), federal government (constituent services with the U.S. House of Representatives), and non-profit management (Boston-Thurmond United).

Regina values her professional experiences that afforded her opportunities to work with a variety of populations including children, young adults, senior adults, veterans, differently-abled, returning/justice-involved, and homeless citizens. Regina is married to DeWayne Hall. Together, they are simply “Mom and Dad” to their daughter, Morgan.

Regina is running to revive the spirit of innovation and creativity in solving local government issues, while bringing excitement and energy to local government. Winston-Salem is resourceful enough to simultaneously address other city challenges including creating a diverse housing stock for ALL citizens (homeless, students, low-wealth, returning citizens/justice involved, senior adults, etc.), increasing support for the entrepreneurial community including small business owners and M/WBE vendors, as well as creating and maintaining thriving entertainment/leisure districts throughout Winston-Salem.

Jared Lamkin, City Council East Ward

I am seeking the opportunity of being elected as a trusted member of the Winston-Salem, NC East Ward (D) Council. Although my Journey began in Philadelphia, PA, I have fully embraced the Piedmont Triad with the pride and respect of my own birthplace.

Annette Scippio

Annette Scippio, City Council East Ward

Annette Scippio, Winston-Salem native, is a servant leader who seeks to give the best of her accumulated knowledge and professional experience to others with integrity and excellence. She navigates through complex situations to bring visions into reality by connecting varied perspectives with crucial people and financial resources. She advocates for positive change despite existing implicit bias.

Action not mere words is her style. She raised dollars for youth leaders to attend national conferences in Atlanta, Kansas City, and Washington, DC. She created the city ‘s African American Heritage Initiative to collect African American history and make a digital public collection. She spearheaded the renaming of the 14th Street Recreation Center in memory of Minnie Harris, the first African American female Recreation Center Supervisor, and named the gymnasium at the Sims Center in honor of beloved supervisor, Ben Piggott.

She is a champion for neighborhood revitalization and renewal. A master plan was completed for the Dreamland Park and Columbia Heights neighborhoods and $2 million was granted to Habitat for Humanity to initiate new housing in Happy Hill. She successfully lead efforts to have the Winston Lake Golf Course listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

A connector, Ms. Scippio brings East Ward businesses, churches and residents to celebrate the 700+ teachers and staff of the 11 East Ward schools during Teacher Appreciation Week; and to provide more than 33,000 meals via the annual ward-wide Food Drive. A major goal is to reduce the high level of poverty through workforce development initiatives.

Carolyn Highsmith

Carolyn Highsmith, City Council South Ward

What sets me apart is my journey of years of community service to the people of the South Ward. As a retired Registered Nurse/Nurse Practitioner with master’s degrees in history and nursing, plus graduate work in business administration, my journey has led me to the heart of our neighborhoods, while advocating for public schools and leading the Konnoak Community Freedom School, a summer literacy program making a real impact on our public-school students, by stopping learning loss and improving reading skills.

Being on the front lines forming neighborhood watch groups, creating and leading community associations, while fostering coalitions that stand for equity in both public education and in our city governance, I believe in the power of collaboration and bringing people together for positive change.

While we’ve faced challenges – from increasing violent crime to decreasing crime prevention—to gentrification, zoning/land-use issues, traffic issues, property tax appeals, along with quality housing needs, I've been there, orchestrating campaigns, speaking not only before the City Council but also before the City/County Planning Board, School Board, and County Commissioners, championing causes that matter to you.

As we navigate these challenging times, I bring not only depth but a genuine understanding of what it takes to make our city better, including increased public participation, accountability and transparency, and the need for quarterly community meetings.

I'm asking for your trust, your support, and your vote. Together, let's move from grassroots to good governance, while making Winston-Salem a place we're proud to call home.

Vivian Joyner

Vivián Joiner, City Council South Ward

I am running for the Winston-Salem City Council because I have been where many of our neighbors have been. Some of our neighbors here in the South Ward start the day or try to sleep at night worrying about basic needs, being on the brink of homelessness or wondering how to afford the grocery bill or put gas in the car. I have had success as a business owner, but have had times where I wasn’t sure of my next meal or how I was going to make rent.

A native Washingtonian, Winston-Salem is the place I chose to call home almost 25 years ago. I have recently concluded services as Chairman of the Business Improvement District, Citizens Police Review Board and a member of the Mayor’s Board to Eliminate Homelessness. As co-owner of Sweet Potatoes – a restaurant I’m committed to offering employment to those re-entering the work force, and helping them get a renewed sense of worth and self-reliance. I strive to being a good steward of my blessings and a good citizen of the world.

I believe local government needs representatives who have shared in the struggles and know what it’s like to deal with hard day to day issues. My campaign focuses on finding solutions to helping those seeking workforce housing, finding ways through government and community collaboration to feed; reducing food insecurity. It is about making sure that abandoned houses are addressed, encouraging businesses to invest in the South Ward. Ensuring that trash is picked up as we build a sense of pride in the South Ward. It is about Unity in Community.

John Larson

John Larson, City Council South Ward

As we examine Winston-Salem in 2024, we tend to see a place plagued with the thorny issues that are present throughout the country: poverty, homelessness, food deserts, crime and an under staffed police force, environmental issues, social equity, a deteriorating infrastructure. But I believe in times like these it is useful to look back and be reminded how resilient our city has been in meeting challenges.

Imagine the challenge in 1760’s of building a new town in the wilderness of North Carolina. Establishing an economy built on the small shops of craftsman. Consider the Industrial Revolution of the mid-19th Century which displaced individual shops with mass manufacturing but propelled Winston-Salem to become the largest city in North Carolina by the 1920s. By the mid-20th Century Winston-Salem’s manufacturing base of textiles, tobacco, and transportation was feeling the pressure of a new economy. The downtown was vacated in favor of suburbia. The city needed to reinvent itself once again. So under the banner of “arts and innovation” it has converted its old manufacturing buildings into centers of medical research and technologies.

I remain optimistic about the future of Winston-Salem. I have been honored to serve on the City Council as we aggressively seek solutions to the challenges listed above. I appreciate the advice of constituents. Indeed, we are all in this together. I look forward for the opportunity to serve a third term as a senior member of Council. This city is resilient and capable of meeting any challenge. So let’s get to it!

Andrew Keever

Andrew Keever, District Court Seat 10

I am asking for your vote and support in the upcoming election to fill the Honorable Victoria Roemer’s soon to be vacant Judicial Seat 10. I have wanted to serve Forsyth County as Judge for many years. For me, it is a calling. In addition to 20+ years of experience in the courtrooms District Court Judges preside over, I possess many qualities which will help me serve as an excellent Judge for Forsyth such as fairness, patience, impartiality, and I am an outstanding listener.

In 1996, I began my commitment to serving others when I worked for a juvenile offender rehabilitation program as mentor and counselor. Since then, I have worked as a Probation and Parole Officer, Real Estate Paralegal, Attorney in private practice, and most recently for the Forsyth County Public Defender’s Office as a Senior Assistant Public Defender. My extensive experience sets me apart to be the candidate you will be proud to support for this important position.

When I am not in court, I enjoy volunteering with many community organizations, playing pickleball, and spending time with my amazing family, wife of 24 years, Meg, two sons, Andrew and Jackson, and daughter, Embrey.

I welcome the opportunity to meet with you and your organizations in person in the next few weeks leading up to the Primary. Please feel free to contact me, and don’t forget to vote for Andrew Keever.

Lauren Tuttle

Lauren Tuttle, District Court Seat 10

As a lifelong Democrat I am dedicated to our fundamental ideals with a strong focus on service. For me, being of service means leaving things better than I found them.

As a Forsyth County Public Defender, I am in court most days engaging with our justice system. To be effective, justice must be accessible, equitable, and impartial for Forsyth County communities, families and youth. I’m committed to ensuring that anyone who appears in front of me is treated with dignity, and respect. Everyone is entitled a complete opportunity to be heard.

Winston-Salem has been my home for most of my life; I graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and Salem College. I have always been drawn to service jobs, from camp counselor, to hospitality, and financial service representative. As an attorney I’ve served clients in all practice areas, criminal, civil and juvenile. I am a mother, a wife, a business owner and an advocate. Now, I am ready to take on the tremendous responsibility of serving my community in a judicial seat.

Equal access to justice is a constitutional right that must be fiercely guarded. As a judge I will be vigilant and unbiased. Justice does not take into account a person’s appearance, the size of their bank account, the color of their skin or the community they come from. I am asking for your support.

Brittany Bailey

Brittany Bailey, Register of Deeds

I earned a Bachelor's Degree from Salem College and a Master's Degree from Strayer University. I am a previous employee of the Forsyth County Register of Deeds Office. I left the Register of Deeds Office and became a Tax Deferment Specialist for Forsyth County Tax Administration.

In August of 2020, I began teaching for the Winston Salem Forsyth County School District. I really enjoyed teaching during the pandemic because I am an advocate for education and I have a specialization background in digital 21st century teaching and learning. Towards the end of the school year, I enrolled in a Real Estate Course to obtain my North Carolina Broker's License. I also enrolled in a Notary Course with Forsyth Technical Community College, I became a North Carolina Public Notary, and I received my North Carolina Broker’s License. Shortly afterwards I joined the Winston Salem Regional Association of Realtors (WSRAR). I am a current member and I am actively helping buyers, investors, and sellers sell homes and purchase homes in the triad area.

I have possessed a massive amount of knowledge since I left the Register of Deeds Office in 2020, and I feel that I would be a better candidate. The importance of the office is to maintain documents and ensure the public has access to this information, it's extremely important for attorneys, paralegals, realtors, and all residents that may need information for their own personal use.
