PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Derrick Fox

Greetings, ACDA Friends,

I’ve just returned from the National ACDA Conference in Dallas, and I’m still buzzing with energy and inspiration from the experience! What an incredible few days of connection, learning, and musical excellence. It was such a joy to gather with colleagues from across the country—and around the globe—to celebrate the choral art together. From thought-provoking interest sessions to stunning performances that stirred the soul, the conference was a powerful reminder of the vibrant and passionate community we are so fortunate to be part of.

One of the most inspiring aspects of the week was seeing so many college students fully engaged in the experience—eager to learn, connect, and grow. I was deeply honored to take part in the collegiate conference events, serving on a panel discussion and working with both undergraduate and graduate students as a clinician for the conducting masterclasses. These emerging leaders are the future of our field, and their enthusiasm was nothing short of contagious.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the New Members & First-Time Conference Attendees reception, generously sponsored by the Korean Tourism Organization. It was wonderful to welcome so many new faces into our ACDA family, and I hope you left feeling inspired, supported, and ready to dive deeper into all that our community has to offer.

The conference in Dallas was truly invigorating—a moment to pause, recharge, and remember why we do what we do. And it’s made me all the more excited for what lies ahead. Our next Midwestern ACDA Conference is just around the corner in 2026, and we’ll be gathering in the beautiful city of Milwaukee! I can confidently say that our outstanding MWACDA board and conference planning committee are already hard at work crafting a gathering that will be enriching, musically fulfilling, and reflective of the incredible diversity and talent within our region.

With that in mind, I’m thrilled to announce that the calls for performing choirs and interest session proposals for the 2026 conference are now OPEN! We warmly invite you to apply—whether you’re a seasoned presenter or bringing your choir for the first time. Every voice brings something unique and valuable to our collective experience. We encourage you to share your expertise, your artistry, and your passion with the wider community.

Our conference theme, Reflections of Us, is a celebration of who we are—as individuals, ensembles, and as a community. It’s designed to be a reunion, a space where we see our daily musical experiences reflected in one another, while also gaining new perspectives and fresh inspiration from across our region. We hope this theme will ground us, challenge us, and bring us closer together.

I can't wait to see the amazing ideas and ensembles that will emerge as part of this next chapter. Let's make 2026 one to remember!

The 2026 Midwestern Conference theme, Reflections of Us, invites us to explore how choral music captures our collective voices—past, present, and future—honoring diverse traditions, shared experiences, and the ever-evolving tapestry of our art. As we lift our voices together, we reflect not only on the music but on each other—our communities, our challenges, and our triumphs—knowing that through song, we discover deeper connections and a greater understanding of who we are.

Call for Auditioned Choirs

The 2026 Midwestern Conference theme, Reflections of Us, invites us to explore how choral music captures our collective voices—past, present, and future—honoring diverse traditions, shared experiences, and the ever-evolving tapestry of our art. As we lift our voices together, we reflect not only on the music but on each other—our communities, our challenges, and our triumphs—knowing that through song, we discover deeper connections and a greater understanding of who we are. We call upon our membership to share performances that demonstrate excellence and showcase a broad spectrum of choral repertoire, including music from pre-1900, works by historically excluded/marginalized composers, and newly composed or commissioned pieces that offer connections to and reflections on the lives and identities of our singers, our choirs, our midwestern communities, and our membership. Conductors from all R&R areas are strongly encouraged to apply. Click here to visit the MWACDA website to submit your choir.

Applications close Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CENTRAL TIME.

Call for Interest Sessions

The Midwestern Region of ACDA welcomes submissions for innovative, applicable, and inspiring interest sessions for our 2026 conference. We encourage sessions of all types that address the diversity of our membership (including student members) and actively engage participants. Session content should include a connection to the conference theme, Reflections of Us. All topics will receive consideration and will be evaluated for scholarly content, variety, innovation, value, pedagogical strength, and relativity to current trends in the choral profession. Conference attendees are looking for high-level content that opens their minds to new possibilities for how they grow in their profession and how they connect back to the field. Click here to visit the MWACDA website to submit your interest session.

Applications close Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CENTRAL TIME.

"A choir is the sound of individuals daring to dream together — where every voice matters, and harmony is proof that unity creates something greater than the sum of its parts."

The Nebraska Choral Directors Association exists to serve our state’s scholastic, parochial, and community choir directors. We achieve that mission through professional development offerings, reading sessions, blog posts, and a summer conference retreat. We also support our members’ singers through festivals and honor ensembles for elementary, middle school, high school and church/community singers.

NCDA is proud to host several events each year to provide our members and their singers the opportunity to engage in educational and meaningful experiences with like-minded musicians and expert leadership. Two of the festivals we are most proud of are Sing Around Nebraska and Singing Youth of Nebraska. These annual festivals unite singers from across our state with highly capable conductors for a day of choral music and memory making. Alternating between a festival choir series with up to 13 regional sites and a single-site auditioned honor choir, we look to provide a truly meaningful experience for singers of any age.

Sing Around Nebraska Festival and Honor Choirs serve our 4th through 6th grade singers in November of each year. This year’s Honor Choir joined the voices of over 100 singers who earned their membership through a state-wide audition. Our Honor Choirs feature nationally known clinicians and 2024 was no exception, as the ensemble was under the leadership of Gretchen Harrison. The elementary singers performed a beautiful concert at the end of their experience.

Singing Youth of Nebraska Festival and Honor Choirs serve our 7th through 9th grade students in January of each year. The 2025 experience was a Festival Choir, so each site’s chorus was made up of non-auditioned singers. While each of this year’s six sites hosted different clinicians, all of the students prepared and performed the same repertoire. It is always so good to empower our middle school and junior high singers with the opportunity to gather and sing outside their school building and school choir program.

Professional Development is another branch of our comprehensive approach to enrich the whole conductor. During the state NAfME conference, NCDA does our best to provide valuable conducting experiences for directors of all experience levels, as well as reading sessions of R&R selected repertoire. The summer months bring a time of rejuvenation as we join on the Peru State College campus for our annual NCDA Conference Retreat. This summer, on June 28 through July 1, we will feature national clinicians and some of Nebraska’s finest educators to guide us through sessions on rehearsal techniques, technology for the conductor, reading sessions, and many others. We even commission and premiere a new work each summer, published through MusicSpoke. Our summer retreat is open to educators from any area and we all come together as one community of conductors.
