Welcome to the Team!

UVLT is excited to introduce Cassie Bernyk, who joins the team as Land Steward & Volunteer Coordinator. Cassie grew up on the sandy shores of New Jersey but always seemed to be in search of higher elevations. After graduating in 2018 from Ramapo College of New Jersey with a B.A. in Environmental Studies, she immediately adventured to New Hampshire. She spent the next few years in the Mt. Washington Valley working for local non-profits, including the Appalachian Mountain Club and The Nature Conservancy.

Trying Times: Conservation Easements and

Federal Tax Law 2022

UVLT’s Jeanie McIntyre was one of six panelists leading a national program to inform land trusts, landowners and their advisors about legal developments related to charitable gifts and conservation easements. Though many land trusts have extensive knowledge of the tax rules and requirements, they cannot provide specific legal and financial advice to landowners nor prepare tax return documents on their behalf. Instead, says McIntyre “It is critical that we provide educational opportunities and support to the advisors who work on behalf of landowners and are accountable for the preparation of these documents. Every landowner’s situation is unique and they must be able to rely on well-informed, competent advisors. We need to help create an environment where that occurs.”

Harvest Roundup at the Food Pantry Gardens

Fall is officially here, and with its arrival comes the impending final harvest, and wrap up of our 2022 Food Pantry Garden season. Each year we are grateful for the many volunteers who commit their time, energy, and skill, to help prepare, plant, and harvest food for our neighbors in need. The work starts the first week in May until the mid-end of October, resulting in 5 months of dedicated volunteer action, and fun.

Monarch Tagging 

A Reflection

Earlier this month, over a dozen eager participants joined UVLT and Dawn from the Sullivan County Conservation District for Monarch Tagging. The group saw a small collection of Monarchs, and many other species including, clouded sulfurs, many orange sulfurs, common ringlets, viceroys, and spangled fritillary butterflies. Planning is already underway for the next season!

Brookmead Potato Harvest with Willing Hands

September 27, 2-5 pm, Norwich, VT

Join UVLT for the annual potato harvest with Willing Hands at Brookmead Food Pantry Garden on Tuesday, September 27th, from 2-5 pm. Volunteers should bring gloves, water, and a snack. We will provide tools (and extra gloves!).

Paddle the Border

October 2, 10 am, Newbury, VT

Paddle the Border (PTB) was started as a way for community organizations from Vermont and New Hampshire to work together to "showcase" our shared asset, the Connecticut River. Now in it's 19th year, this UVLT sponsored event promotes the natural, cultural, scenic and recreational resources of the Connecticut River. PTB is held twice a year weather permitting-no rain dates are planned. So come, meet new friends and fellow paddlers, and join the fun!
