BizTips from SCORE - Market Smarter
You have heard that owning and managing a small business is a 24/7 proposition. At the same time, you know the secret to small business success is to work smarter, not harder. If you apply this same strategy to marketing your brand, you will find that eclipsing your larger competitor is possible. Consider these principles in achieving this goal:
· Hope is not a strategy. When you use data and plan your next steps rather than “hoping” your tactics will work, your marketing will connect with future buyers.
· Concentrate on what you do best. You cannot be all to everyone, so focusing on your competitive advantage will propel you to achieving your revenue and market share goals.
· Avoiding DIY. When you try to do it all yourself, something will suffer and if it is in the marketing world, the result might be not connecting with those who have needs you can fulfill. Delegate or subcontract tasks that are not in your wheelhouse to assure they are being done as well as possible.
· Invest in marketing. Marketing - building brand awareness - is not a cost. It is an investment in your business’ future. Invest in a strategist that can help you see what you don’t see since you may be too close to the action of your business.
· Think and act strategically. If all you do is react to environmental changes, you are always going to behind the competition. If all you are is transactional, you are going to be hoping to draft your competition. To get out in front you have to be strategic in your thinking and planning by seeing the bigger picture and analyzing where you fit. You can then take actions that benefit the longer-term sustainability of your enterprise.
