On Saturday August 10th, the council held the August kickoff!
Our annual August Kickoff marks the beginning of the new Girl Scout year and allows Service Units and Association teams an opportunity to come together. It's an exciting event that builds team spirit among Council members and volunteers.
Together, the Council and volunteers planned activities and celebrated the upcoming year. Inspiring one another with goals for the brand-new year and sharing in our passion for Girl Scouts is what connects us all!

At the July managers retreat, teams competed to make the best tasting (and looking) guacamole. Coming in first place were these guacamole boats with tortilla chip sails! Hopefully, they remember this recipe to share with the rest of us. |
Here is the winning team—David, Kim, Erin, and Betsy—with their guacamole which they served in avocado boats. |
Another team's guacamole served on a bed of cilantro, that looks straight out of the Food Network. |
One team got extra creative with garnishes. | | |

Here are some of Kate's favorite things! |
1. Reading. Reading has been my most consistent hobby throughout my life, and while I can't choose a favorite book, I do have a favorite author. Megan Miranda has written many mysteries/thrillers, and I have her 3 newest books on my TBR pile.
2. Cooking. Cooking is my second favorite hobby, and I learned from my mother while I was growing up. My favorite dish to make is chicken pot pie.
3. Scary movies. Growing up with an older brother, I loved to do whatever it was he was doing, and that is how my love for scary movies began. One of my favorite things is sitting around a TV with all my cousins and re-watching some of our favorites.
4. Cats. I have 2 kitties at home who are brothers,
and have had them since I was little. I love curling up with them and taking cat naps.
5. Dark chocolate. My love for dark chocolate began when I was a kid, stealing my mom's sweets. It is my go-to sweet treat!

- 1 jalapeño seeded (or not) and chopped – optional if you want it hotter!
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon sea salt

- ½ Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 2 Tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped + extra for garnish

Black Bean Dip
from Lynn Thompson
|
Directions
Add oil to a skillet over medium heat. Once hot add onion and garlic (and jalapeño, if using) and cook, tossing frequently so the garlic doesn’t burn. After about 5 minutes add in the spices (cumin, chili powder, sea salt and cayenne pepper). Toss to combine and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. Add a tablespoon of water if the pan starts to dry out. After about 10 minutes of cooking total, remove from heat.
Place garlic and onion mixture, black beans, reserved black bean liquid, tomato paste, lime juice, apple cider vinegar, and fresh cilantro into a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Taste and add additional spices, if needed. More salt or perhaps more cayenne pepper if you want the dip to be spicier.
Transfer the dip to a bowl, garnish with extra cilantro and sour cream, if using.
Store in the fridge until ready to serve. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days.
