On Sunday, February 23 rd , thirteen (13) HERO children, as well as parents and staff, had the opportunity to attend the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performance (a world renowned, modern dance troupe) at the Atlanta Fox Theater. For some children, this was their first time attending an Alvin Ailey performance, and their first time visiting the historic Fox Theater.

The evening featured four riveting performances, which included ten dynamic ballet pieces – both new and critically acclaimed works- such as “Revelations,” which chronicles African-American spirituality and endurance from slavery to emancipation. The children sat in wonderment as they witnessed the artistry, grace and athleticism of the Alvin Ailey dancers – tapping along with the jazz, blues and modern melodies. Some of the kids could be heard whispering and questioning the performers’ astonishing flexibility and stamina. The children thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon out (HERO provided snacks, as well), discussed it on their rides home, and shared their experiences with their parents/guardians afterwards.

H.E.R.O. is grateful to have been able to provide our kids with such a unique and 'unforgettable experience' that very few children are afforded. We look forward to continually exposing them to culturally diverse art forms.
Also on Sunday, February 23 rd , UGA HEROs threw their first kid event for 2020! The team of philanthropists brought twenty-three (23) H.E.R.O. children up to Athens for a day at the local roller rink. Athens Skate-Inn hosted our children and UGA HEROs members for a fun afternoon of skating and listening to music. Our children were able to play games, both on the rink and in the arcade area, and were given a lunch in between! Finally, the day concluded with rides back to Atlanta. New members of UGA HEROs had so much fun interacting with our children for the first time, and cannot wait for the next event! The H.E.R.O. children had a great time meeting new people and forming new friendships!
H.E.R.O. would like to express our congratulations to our Camp High Five Assistant Camp Director - Tylah Hankerson - for her photo feature in the 2020 Camp Twin Lakes Camp Directors' Manual!
Anchor, the youth division of Pilot International, is a student organization focused on rendering service to home, school and community. These amazing students selected H.E.R.O. for Children as their service project this year, and contributed the toiletries and activity supplies we need for our 2020 session of Camp High Five. What a blessing!

The Super HEROes Mentoring Program is a community-based, one-on-one mentoring program serving children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. The program provides these children with the opportunity to have a positive role model through a mentor and to strengthen their life skills, self-esteem, communication skills, goal-setting and academic performance.

Volunteer mentors needed to:
  • Spend one-on-one quality time with a child at least twice a month, a minimum of two hours each time.
  • Participate with the child in a bi-monthly group activity organized and sponsored by H.E.R.O. for Children.
  • Be a positive role model for the child.
  • Contribute to strengthening the child's self-esteem, social adjustment and life skills.

Camp High Five offers children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS a one-week summer camp program during which they participate in a variety of recreational activities and educational workshops. Activities include archery, boating, canoeing, swimming, fishing, biking, arts and crafts, music, and much, much more!

Camp High Five will be held from Sunday, June 21st through Friday, June 26th, 2020 at Camp Twin Lakes-Will-A-Way site in Winder, Georgia. Counselors must report to the camp site on Saturday, June 20th, 2020. Child and volunteer admission criteria and applications are currently available on our website.
