Freeing Jesus – Conversations with Diana Butler Bass about Re-Imaging Faith
Wednesday, October 20 – Thursday, October 21 at 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
“How can you still be a Christian?” This is the most common question Diana Butler Bass is asked today. It is a question that many people ponder as they wrestle with disappointment and disillusionment in their church and its leadership. But while many Christians have left their churches, they cannot leave their faith behind. In Freeing Jesus (HarperOne), Diana challenges the idea that Jesus can only be understood in static, one-dimensional ways. She encourages readers to “leave the religious wars behind and rediscover Jesus in all his many manifestations, to experience Jesus beyond the narrow confines we have built around him. It renews our hope in faith and worship at a time when we need it most.” These two informal sessions will be a combination of talks, Q&A and participant engagement. See here to register.

Holy Wisdom Mother of God: Exploring the Divine Feminine- A virtual retreat with the Rev. Matthew Wright. Join us for a virtual retreat with the Rev. Matthew Wright exploring the Divine Feminine in the Jewish and Christian traditions, particularly under the guises of Sophia, or Holy Wisdom, and Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Drawing on the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, the mysticism of Thomas Merton, Holy Scripture, and the writings of early saints, we’ll discover Mary as a face of fierce compassion and as the God-birthing dimension of our own souls. The retreat will involve three online sessions: Friday evening, November 5, at 6pm MT, Saturday morning, November 6, from 10-12noon MT and Saturday afternoon, November 6, from 1-2:30pm MT. See here to register.
Retreat to explore the art and writing of Hildegard von Bingen, October 22 – 24th at Sorrento Centre. Hildegard (1098-1179) was a Benedictine Abbess, Christian mystic, composer, philosopher, prophet and poet. Her themes of God's energy in Creation will inspire and resonate with those seeking a life-giving spiritual path in our own time. Course fee: $135 + meals and accommodation. The Most Rev. Dr. Lynne McNaughton, Bishop of Kootenay, will lead the retreat; she has taught “Women Christian Mystics” at Vancouver School of Theology, and has led pilgrimages to the monastery of Hildegard, in Bingen, Germany along the Rhine Valley. If you are interested in carpooling to Sorrento speak with the Rev. Carolyn
