2020 Volume II | June 19th
June 2020 Program Update
Just three months ago, our lives were turned upside down, and all that we valued in Special Olympics seemed to be out of reach. But the passion and spirit of Special Olympics Wyoming is still alive and thriving – we’ve worked hard to stay connected with each other – we’ve looked at creative ways to keep active and waited for the door to open so we can celebrate in person. Thank you to all the coaches and coordinators that kept our program connected – thank you to the Law Enforcement community for their remarkable show of support – thank you to our athletes for believing!

As many of you know, I have announced my retirement for the beginning of September. I have been honored and privileged to work with the best athletes in the world, phenomenal coaches and volunteers, remarkable families, and generous donors. There are no words that come close to how grateful I am to have been able to work and volunteer for Special Olympics in so many capacities.

Keep the passion strong, the will to be better than we were yesterday, and celebrate every day.

Competition Update
With the ‘Return to Play’ in its early stages, we have a schedule for the remainder of our competition year. Event-by-event updates will be posted on our website as we decide on which sports we will be able to offer and how we may need to make adjustments to assure the safety of all of our competitors.
The Summer Sports Classic has moved to August 28 th and 29 th in Casper. The Unified Sports® Golf Tournament and the Cycling competition are confirmed. Bowling and Softball are still tentative as of Monday, June 22 nd . Check out our web page for more details as they become available.
The Equestrian Show is Saturday, September 12 th , in Casper. While athletes have begun to train, we are waiting on the status of Central Wyoming Fairgrounds to determine if the event can be held at that venue. Our target day for determination is the week of July 20th.
Fall Tournament is set for October 7 th  through the 9 th hosted at locations in and around Casper. At this point, we are unable to predict which events we will be able to host. Our goal is for decisions to be made in July so that athletes may start training. Visit our website for more information on Fall Tournament.
Fundraising
We are excited to announce that on July 15 th Special Olympics Wyoming  will be participating in WyoGives! This 24-hour online event is a great way to get our community excited about giving locally and supporting Special Olympics Wyoming athletes. Our goal is to have these funds support “We’re Back” and underwriting the additional costs of hosting events in this time of COVID-19. Please take a look at the web page for more information.
The Wyoming Virtual Torch Run got underway on May 15 th and will finish up on July 15 th . Everyone is encouraged to join us as we walk, run, and cycle our way to reaching our goals. Three goals:
1. To engage more Law Enforcement Personnel and athletes in Torch Run efforts; 106 registered so far.
2. To cover the distance of 2,020 miles: They’ve reached that already, so we’ve reset the goal to 2 X 2,020.
3. To raise $20,200; Over $6,000 has been raised to date.
