Story of the Rose Parade
The first phase of any Rose Parade adventure for the horse groups is participation in Equestfest. This is an event held before parade day at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center where all the Rose Parade horses are housed. It gives the public a chance to see all the horses that are going to be in the parade. The Arabians present were a wonderful representation of the breed’s versatility. We had a reining horse, western horses, hunter horses, country horses, a search and rescue horses and my carriage horse! Our Arabian horses greeted all the visitors with kindness and interest. Some of these people had never even touched a horse! Our gentle horses handled it all gracefully. My carriage horse is an 11 year old grey mare named Heaven Cent. She is kindness personified. She LOVED Equestfest. But I had no idea how she would handle the Rose Parade. She had never been in a parade!

The day before the parade we washed and readied our horses. My carriage, a reproduction back to back village cart, had to be taken to a staging area near the parade route where we decorated it with flowers provided for with AHA funds. Then, we headed back to the barns to get the horses. Contrary to what you might think, we don't just drive in to the parade that morning and get ready. Oh no, you have to spend the night with your horse and trailer alongside a portion of the freeway known as "The Pit". They park us in our order of go and we sit there all night.... sort of camping out. Our official wakeup call was 4:30am. By 6:18am we were required to check at Pit HQ. Then they released us to walk to the staging area. We were dressed, me in traditional carriage attire and Joanne in formal groomsman attire. We were leading Heaven in her harness because the cart was waiting for us in the staging area where we would hook her up.

It was about a mile or so to the staging area and we got her hooked up without any issues. Our group was near the front of the parade, fifth in line and following the Cal Poly float. Off we went following through the crowds. It was like negotiating an obstacle course and my pretty little mare never took a wrong step or got excited or scared by any of it. We waited for the parade to start, the stands around us filling with people, many coming up close to see our beautiful horses. At 8:00am the stealth bomber flew over the parade route making a huge roar, and then we were off. I can't begin to describe the feeling when you first round that iconic corner of Orange and Colorado Blvd and see the entire 5 miles of parade route stretched before you. The bleachers are three stories high, TV cameras are everywhere and the excitement was palpable. We are required to stay 160 ft behind the float in front of us and maintain a slow pace. Occasional stops when we caught up to the float were made more entertaining as Kathy engaged the spectators in a contest to see which side of the street could shout Happy New Year the loudest. Finally the end of the parade, we were hoarse from shouting Happy New Year and the horses were relaxed as they walked another mile to the parking area where volunteer drivers were waiting with our trucks and trailers to take us back to the L A Equestrian Center. Water was waiting for our thirsty mounts, and In and Out Burgers were there with a trailer giving out free Cheeseburgers to all of us. It was a Glorious day and something I will never forget! Many thanks is due to our AHA President Nancy Harvey for organizing the whole thing, for all the volunteers who helped make it happen, for our riders and of course for our beautiful Arabian Horses!
