Welcoming everyone to walk through our doors on the journey to Christ

4 Blessed is the one
    who trusts in the Lord,
who does not look to the proud to those who turn aside to false gods
5 Many, Lord my God,
are the wonders you have done,
the things you planned for us.
None can compare with you;
were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
they would be too many to declare.

St. David's Episcopal Church

Annual Meeting

St. David’s bylaws require that we hold our annual meeting on the last Sunday in January, in this case January 31, 2021. As we are not currently permitted to meet in person, we will hold our annual meeting on Zoom, at 11:30 am. A link will be emailed in advance of the meeting.

At the meeting, we will hear reports from the Rector, from the wardens, and from the treasurer. Other reports will be received by title, and available both electronically and on paper (on request).

We will also elect three vestry members – two to three-year terms, and one to a two-year term to complete Carol Murphy’s unexpired term. We will also elect a warden for a two-year term. The slate of candidates will be included in the email with the Zoom information. Paper ballots will also be available upon request as of Monday, January 25, 2021.

We are sailing into new waters, so we’ll make this work as best we can. If you have never used Zoom before and would like to do a trial run, join us for Coffee Hour this Sunday (Zoom information goes out on Sunday mornings at 7:00 am). Or give the rector a call, and we can set up a practice session.

New Ministry and new challenges.

On Monday, January 18, 2021, at 7:00 in the evening, Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe presided of a celebration of the Renewal of Ministry of St. David’s with the Welcoming of a New Rector. It was a wonderful service. Many thanks are due to everyone who participate, and especially to David Burgess who coordinated all the video and audio.

We begin this new year with a sense of hope and joy. St. David’s has been through some difficult times, and the prospect of a new beginning gives us hope for the future. I couldn’t help but connect St. David’s new beginning with what our nation has been through. 2020 was an unusual year (and that is a colossal understatement). The SARS CoV-2 pandemic has affected the entire globe, but no nation more than the United States. We have worshipped in-person on fewer than half the Sundays of this past year. Most of us have not been to restaurants, concerts, movie theaters, or any of the other ways we connect socially for a better part of the year. I’ve had one haircut since February (I cut my own hair on occasion).

With the availability of vaccines for the virus, we are beginning to allow ourselves to hope for return, not to normal, but at least to some form of social interaction that doesn’t involve a computer screen. Our economy is in tatters, but St. David’s has come through this past year in a decent financial position. Our income was less than anticipated, mostly because we did not collect rent from groups that did not meet, and we were not able to hold several fundraisers. But, expenses were also down, so we finished the year in the black.

For 2021, the Vestry has approved a deficit budget. We left expenses at prior levels, just so we would not get comfortable thinking they would stay down forever, and only included income we could be sure of (pledges, trust income, and the like). The Vestry will watch income and expenses during the year, and make necessary adjustments. I am hopeful that the optimism we are finally allowing ourselves to feel will bleed over into St. David’s finances. We approved a deficit budget last year, and yet ended the year in the black (in part due to PPP loan, for which we should be eligible again this year).

In my many years of parish ministry, I have come to the firm conviction that if a congregation is doing the ministry God calls it to do, the resources for that ministry will be provided. But that means we have to do our best to hear where God is calling us. Just because “we’ve always done it that way,” doesn’t mean that’s what God has in mind for us. We have to be willing to move in new directions as the Spirit blows us.

My confidence rests on what I experience here at St. David’s. At Bible Study, in coffee hour, in Vestry meetings, we are developing a strong sense of community, and I believe, opening ourselves to hear God’s call. If we continue in that work, I believe God will be with us.

God’s Love Endures Forever

A Prayer of Thanks based on Psalm 136

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords
His love endures forever.
who came to earth as a baby to be our savior
His love endures forever.
who grew and learned and listened
His love endures forever.
who walked this earth
His love endures forever.
who felt pain, joy, suffering, and love
His love endures forever.
who welcomed the outcast and sinner
His love endures forever.
who praised God with all his being
His love endures forever.
who healed and cared and offered compassion
His love endures forever.
who crossed boundaries
His love endures forever.
who taught God’s word and offered hope
His love endures forever.
who calls us today to follow him
His love endures forever.
to come and see a world filled with hope
His love endures forever.
to offer a hand to those in need
His love endures forever.
to feed neighbors
His love endures forever.
to seek justice
His love endures forever.
to love unconditionally
His love endures forever.
to wash feet
His love endures forever.
to open our tables and our doors
His love endures forever.
to offer forgiveness.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord
His love endures forever.
who calls us beloved
His love endures forever.
who welcomes us as a parent welcomes a child
His love endures forever.
who loves us from before birth
His love endures forever.
who listens to our prayers even before we speak them
His love endures forever.
who offers grace and forgiveness.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord.
His love endures forever.

COVID-19

Return to Virtual Worship:

As the infection rates continue to rise in our region and around the US, Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe has announced updates to the Diocesan COVID-19 response for all parishes.

These new guidelines go into effect on Sunday, November 29, 2020. We expect to follow these guidelines through at least January 1, 2021; they may be modified prior to that date.
Please visit the diocesan COVID-19 resource hub at cnyepiscopal.org/covid-19 to:
Key elements of the updated COVID-19 guidelines include:
  • We will no longer be using "steps" or "phases" but will follow a unified response plan that will be updated, as necessary. We will continue to notify parish leaders of updates by email and in clergy and wardens' meetings.
  • Indoor in-person gatherings are suspended.
  • Live-streaming and recording worship from within the church is permitted.
  • Outdoor and “drive-in” gatherings, with Holy Eucharist, are permitted.
  • Essential community outreach ministries continue.
Services at St. David’s will return to a Virtual format on our Facebook Page (Facebook/StDavids) every Sunday at 10am, with a Virtual Coffee Hour to follow around 10:45am on Zoom.

We are still in need readers and special music. Please contact Pastor Dan or Nick Fields if you’re interested in reading or providing special music.

It’s important to remember your fellow parishioners in your prayers during this difficult period of time. Thank you for keeping our communities safe, and for responding with creativity and love in this difficult time. May God continue to be with us as we learn to love God, one another, and all God has created.

Jonah 3:1-5, 10

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

1 Corinthians 7:29-31

I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.

Mark 1:14-20

After John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
