Gracious God, you have given us much today. Be with us still and when we take our rest, renew us for the service of your Son Jesus Christ.

In-person worship

All those many months ago (it seems like years), when we first closed down because of the novel corona virus (it was the Sunday before Palm Sunday that was our first virtual worship), I optimistically thought we might be back together by Easter. We are now coming up on the fifth Sunday after Pentecost. I was off by a few weeks.

In my Palm Sunday sermon, I said I would hold on to the palms and invite you each to take one home with you to keep throughout the year, and next year, before Ash Wednesday, we would gather in the memorial garden to burn the palms for ashes, as a reminder of all we had been through in the intervening year.

I could not have foreseen then what a strange year would turn out to be. Does anyone remember murder hornets now? They were a thing for a while, but other events have pushed them into oblivion.

We will finally be able to gather for in-person worship on Sunday, July 12, 2020. We are still in the midst of a pandemic, though the State of New York has done a better job of mitigating the spread of the virus than many other states.

At present, we are allowed to gather 25 people outside. Weather permitting, we will gather 25 of us, on Sunday, July 12, in the courtyard and lawn outside the office entrance of St. David’s. We will be able to have communion (bread only). To limit our numbers, we will require reservations. During the coming week, you will receive an email from St. David’s with a response ‘button.’ The response will keep track of who you are, so we know who has attended the service (we will check you off the list as you arrive) so that we can contact trace, if necessary.

If you do not have email (there are a few), we will call to ask if you want to attend, and keep track of your response as well. If you are not comfortable attending, please know that we will stream the service on Facebook, so that you can ‘attend’ that way, and we will also record a service as we have done in past weeks, for distribution on DVD.

I will hand out the desiccated palms on Sunday, July 12 (without touching them) for you to keep at home during the rest of this unusual year. They will help serve as a reminder that, whatever may happen, God, in Jesus, has walked the way of the cross before us, and that despite the worst that can happen, we know the end of the story is Christ’s resurrection.

The Rest of the Story

Preachers have a hard time ending sermons, says preaching professor Will Willimon. “It takes faith to end a sermon,” he says, meaning one must leave the results of the sermon to Jesus. To allow Jesus into the room in such a way as to be the one who challenges those present, to encourage and to comfort. But we preachers  do  have such a hard time letting go.

Which probably explains the lady who came up to the priest after church. “Nice sermon, Mother,” she told her, then added, “followed by two not-so-nice sermons.” Going on and on and on … is the temptation not only of priests, but of many people.

Same thing happens in Vestry meetings, and in lots of board meetings I’ve attended over the years. One person says something, someone else adds a different dimension to the topic, and then a third person repeats what the first two have already said. Repetition, as though repeating something makes it more important, or perhaps someone will be more likely to you than the first person who said exactly the same thing. Which is a lot like preachers. Repeating ourselves. Even repeating Jesus. Thinking our version will be better-received...

Samaritan Update

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic we have not been making our sandwiches, Instead Linda has been buying the items necessary and bringing them to the center for them to make the sandwiches.

But we can help in other ways:

Donations are needed to service for our Samaritan Center clients
……$100 seems to be the average
……Any amount would be accepted
·         …… Pre-packaged cookies are needed and can be dropped off at the church while Kristen is there

The Samaritan Center is also in need of these items:

  • Prepackaged cookies
  • To go containers
  • Plastic forks & spoons
  • Bottled water
  • Bottled juices
  • Sandwiches or any kind on any bread
  • And the "bad" plastic bags if anyone cares to give them up
Please contact Cherie, or myself email: [email protected] , 315-637-6952
Thank you for all you have done so far. Please be safe yourselves.

Need Help? Want to help?

During this unprecedented time, you may find yourself wanting to help out, or needing a little extra help. Several people at St. David’s have volunteered to help our more vulnerable members. If you have difficulty getting groceries, those volunteers would be happy to pick up a curb-side order for you, and deliver it to your house. We can also help you place an order for curb-side pick-up, if you’ve never done that before. If that would be helpful to you, please call Cherié Finkbeiner at:
315-729-9313
Or Email Cherie:
Do you have a sewing machine and some extra fabric?
Syracuse School food workers need masks for handing out take-home meals.
Our own Jim Slayton will deliver them.
Click the link below to find a pattern.

If you can make some masks, put them in a ziplock bag and drop them in the blue bin on the Church porch, and Jim will make sure they get to the people who need them.
Let us know if you can help out.

Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67

The servant said to Laban, “I am Abraham’s servant. The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become wealthy; he has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female slaves, camels and donkeys. And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and he has given him all that he has. My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live; but you shall go to my father’s house, to my kindred, and get a wife for my son.’

“I came today to the spring, and said, ‘O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you will only make successful the way I am going! I am standing here by the spring of water; let the young woman who comes out to draw, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,” and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also” —let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’

“Before I had finished speaking in my heart, there was Rebekah coming out with her water jar on her shoulder; and she went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will also water your camels.’ So I drank, and she also watered the camels. Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her arms. Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to obtain the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son. Now then, if you will deal loyally and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so that I may turn either to the right hand or to the left.”

And they called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will.” So they sent away their sister Rebekah and her nurse along with Abraham’s servant and his men. And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “May you, our sister, become thousands of myriads; may your offspring gain possession of the gates of their foes.” Then Rebekah and her maids rose up, mounted the camels, and followed the man; thus the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and was settled in the Negeb. Isaac went out in the evening to walk in the field; and looking up, he saw camels coming. And Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac, she slipped quickly from the camel, and said to the servant, “Who is the man over there, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Romans 7:15-25a

I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

Jesus said to the crowd, “To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another,

‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not mourn.’

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
