Welcoming everyone to walk through our doors on the journey to Christ
Pentecost

Dear Lord, when the things of daily life sometimes seem so overwhelming, please help me to see the daily blessings you pour upon me. Then, give thanks, breathe deeply, and continue refreshed, renewed!

St. David's Episcopal Church
Indoor worship

The Diocese has moved into “Step Three” in the plan for regathering.  That means we can worship indoors at 33% capacity.  Our occupancy permit is for 139 people, so we will be able to have 46 people in worship.  We will move indoors on Sunday, October 11, with both 8 am and 10 am services.

Sunday, October 4, 2020

I will be out of town one last Sunday, October 4, packing my mom for her move to Bellingham, Washington.  The service that Sunday will be virtual only on Facebook at 10:00 am.  The following Sunday, we will move indoors.

Moving Forward

As part of the process of calling me as rector, the Vestry, under the direction of Canon Carrie Schofield-Broadbent, undertook a simple Mutual Ministry Review.  We answered several questions about communication within the Vestry and staff.  The Vestry has submitted a letter to Bishop DeDe asking permission to call me as rector.  As a next step, the Vestry would like to share the results of that survey with and gather input from the wider congregation.  We believe that what we learned from the survey is a good foundation to build on for the future, and would like to know where you see St. David’s now and moving forward. You can see the results of the survey here

Vestry members will host four “cottage meetings” on Zoom at the end of the month.  After we have moved indoors, we will host another meeting for those who do not have access to reliable internet.  The cottage meeting schedule is listed below:

Monday, September 28, 2020, 7:00 pm

Wednesday, September 30, 2020, 5:30 pm

Thursday, October 1, 2020, 10:00 am

Saturday, October 3, 2020, 10:00 am

You will be able sign up for a cottage meeting here (soon). You will receive an invitation to the Zoom by email once you have signed up.

The Vestry is excited to take this step, and we believe that St. David’s is beginning a new and positive direction in our corporate life.  We hope that many of you will attend these meetings to share our excitement and give your input for this new phase in our life together.

Stewardship

It’s not too early to start thinking about stewardship.  And what we usually mean by that is pledging toward the budget for the next year.  I have always believed that if a congregation had a sense that it was engaged in God’s mission for the world, the money would be there.  No one wants to be beat over the head and told they must pledge to keep the church open.  As soon as that starts happening, the church is on a downhill slide.  If instead, we work from a perspective of abundance, things go much better.  I always start from the assumption that all of the gifts we need to be about what God would have us do are already present in the congregation.  A sense of excitement only grows.

The Vestry is excited at where St. David’s has come in the last year, and I believe that is the heart of our stewardship for this coming year.  God is giving us all we need to do what God would have us do.  Obviously, there will be more explicit opportunities coming up in the fall for you to make a financial pledge to St. David’s for 2021, but for now, it is enough to share the excitement of what God is doing here.

The Pause Before the Plunge

This day, September 10, is always an odd day for me. It’s a day between my birthday—and the remembrance of the terrorist attacks that happened on September 11, 2001. The remembrances of those initial hours and days and weeks after those attacks cast a shadow over this day, reminding us of how swiftly our world can change. And it’s a day when I think about all the thousands of lives lost—innocent lives, casualties of an undeclared war—both here and around the world who, through no fault of their own, got caught between the grinding mill of hatred and vengeance that emerged both that day, and in the days and years that followed.

Today is the pause before the plunge that sweeps over those who remember and mourn. I wonder about how we honor the memory of those who gave their lives for others, and how we remember the messages of love as well as the images of destruction from that day.

This year, in the midst of this pandemic, when it seems that nothing changes fast enough, it is also a constant reminder of how God’s comforting presence abides with us always, even in the midst of sorrow and grief. And it is a day I usually pray this prayer:

Loving God,
You show us through the glorious Trinity
the way of mutual love that leads to action:
hear our prayers, we pray.

That we may place no bonds upon each other
but the bonds of love, equality, and peace,
we pray to You, O God.

That we may be knit together
in a common cause
to nourish all who hunger in body, mind, or soul,
we pray to You, O God.

That we may use our might
for mercy and justice,
rather than vengeance and violence,
we pray to You, O God.

That we may be faithful and compassionate stewards
of your wondrous creation,
we pray to You, O God.

That we remember those who have been lost
through violence and terror,
and honor their lives by sowing peace and concord,
we pray to You, O God.
Ground of our Being,
Creator, Redeemer, Comforter,
hear the prayers of your people,
and extend your peace over all who turn to You,
for You are gracious, O Lover of Souls.

Amen.

Samaritan Update

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic we have not been making our sandwiches, Instead Linda has been buying the items necessary and bringing them to the center for them to make the sandwiches.

But we can help in other ways:

Donations are needed to service for our Samaritan Center clients
……$100 seems to be the average
……Any amount would be accepted
·       …… Pre-packaged cookies are needed and can be dropped off at the church while Kristen is there

The Samaritan Center is also in need of these items:

  • Prepackaged cookies
  • To go containers
  • Plastic forks & spoons
  • Bottled water
  • Bottled juices
  • Sandwiches or any kind on any bread
  • And the "bad" plastic bags if anyone cares to give them up
Please contact Cherie, or myself email: [email protected], 315-637-6952
Thank you for all you have done so far. Please be safe yourselves.

Need Help? Want to help?

During this unprecedented time, you may find yourself wanting to help out, or needing a little extra help. Several people at St. David’s have volunteered to help our more vulnerable members. If you have difficulty getting groceries, those volunteers would be happy to pick up a curb-side order for you, and deliver it to your house. We can also help you place an order for curb-side pick-up, if you’ve never done that before. If that would be helpful to you, please call Cherié Finkbeiner at:

Exodus 16:2-15

The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days.” So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaining against the Lord. For what are we, that you complain against us?” And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening and your fill of bread in the morning, because the Lord has heard the complaining that you utter against him—what are we? Your complaining is not against us but against theLord.”

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, ‘Draw near to the Lord, for he has heard your complaining.’“ And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. The Lord spoke to Moses and said, “I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’“

In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.

Philippians 1:21-30

To me, living is Christ and dying is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which I prefer. I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again.

Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God's doing. For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well-- since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

Matthew 20:1-16

Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, ‘Why are you standing here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’ When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
