As a crowd grew at Las Positas College, a woman student says, "Why do you care so much? That clump of cells isn't even alive until the heart starts beating, or the brain starts to work." I asked her if her notion that when the heart and brainwaves are functioning, abortion should be banned? "Yes," she boldly proclaimed. In front of all her friends, I asked her when she thinks the heart and brain start to work? "At six months," she shouted. I told her that the heart of a preborn baby starts beating at twenty-one days and forty days for the brain.
The student looked irritated as her wall came tumbling down. The crowd seemed quieter after that as I continued to tell them that "when their premise is wrong, their conclusion is wrong." I noted that their ideas about abortion are not based on science or logic, so how can they form a correct view about any subject
if their "facts" come from the echo chamber rather than honest research?
The crowd of interested collegians stayed for almost two hours.
