From Hemingway to Santeria: A Week in Vibrant Cuba with OLLI at DU
OLLI at DU members recently enjoyed an unforgettable adventure to Cuba, filled with vibrant culture, exciting activities, and the expert guidance of our tour leader, Valentina. From the moment we arrived in Havana, we were immersed in the city's colorful streets and lively atmosphere.
Despite a national power outage during our last two days, Valentina quickly adapted and ensured our excursions and meals in Trinidad continued without a hitch. She led us through charming neighborhoods, where we soaked in the architecture and interacted with local artists including the home of Fidel Castro's personal photographer. We dined in cozy, candle-lit restaurants and experienced Cuba’s rich culture, from salsa dancing, Ernest Hemingway's farm, and a scenic tour in classic cars all around Havana.
Throughout the week, we enjoyed a private tour of the national museum, cigar rolling and mojitos de mafia at the National Hotel, a tour of the Colonial architectural museum, and a talk with the leading priest of Santeria in temple Yamalo, making each day more memorable than the last. Valentina’s skill in navigating every situation, coupled with the warmth and beauty of Cuba, left us with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the island’s unique charm.
