Congratulations to Caleb Goble for passing his Core Knowledge and NFI Certified Wood Burning Specialist exams! He is the latest member of The Woodway Hearth team to become NFI Certified! (click on the link and put in your zip code to see the entire NFI Certified Installer list.) Caleb has graciously agreed to share his experience at the HPB Expo 2025.

This year was my first year attending the HPB Expo, which was held in New Orleans, LA. The HPB Expo is an event where manufacturers, distributors, dealers, installation technicians and service technicians can all gather to participate in educational opportunities, new innovations, and networking across the industry. The HPB organizes this event annually to help it's members across the industry share best practices and encourage growth.

The Woodway provided me the opportunity to get my National Fireplace Institute (NFI) Core and Woodburning Specialist certification which will help me assist our hearth customers. After many hours of study prior to the Expo and 7 hours of refresher classes at the Expo I took the tests. The National Fireplace Institute Certification was comprised of a core knowledge test (120 minutes) and a wood specialist test (90 minutes). I was more stressed about these tests than I can remember being in high school or college, so it was a great relief when I had passed. After testing, I was able to get down to the Exhibit Hall floor to look at new products for homeowners in Interior Alaska.

Of note on new appliances, Blaze King is in the development phase of a smaller stove, the Blaze King 16. The goal is to provide an option with tighter clearances for customers looking for “wicked long burn times” for 900-1300 square feet, like a cabin or small home. The current prototype has a space for wood below the stove which is similar to the Kuma Aberdeen and Quadrafire Discovery I woodstoves on our showroom floor.

While I enjoyed seeing New Orleans, I would never want to live there and was thankful to get back to Fairbanks, Alaska where I feel at home!
