Principals Message
A great start to the school year

Dear Fallback,

We are off to a great start with Parents as Teachers, Starlets and Pre-K. I want to thank each of you for being a part of Maize Early Childhood Center!

One of the things that sets MECC apart is our use of Co-Teaching. Each classroom is led by a general education teacher with the support of a special education co-teacher for a portion of the day. Classroom staff also includes 1-2 paras along with speech, occupational or physical therapists as appropriate to inclusively meet all students needs. Together, the teachers plan, teach and assess progress, working to modify lessons to challenge all students. The general education curriculum is presented to all students and is modified when appropriate. The benefit, all children learn together and all are supported to meet their individual needs.

Our school uses a balance of child chosen and teacher directed learning strategies to meet our Kansas Early Learning Standards and prepare children for kindergarten and beyond. For our 3 year olds, we use, My Read it Again curriculum. For our 4 year old classrooms we use, Opening the World of Learning for literacy, Eureka Math for numeracy and Second Steps for Social Emotional learning. We use developmentally appropriate practices and learning through play to meet the needs of all students.

If you ever have any questions, comments or thoughts please don't hesitate to email, call or just stop by to talk.

Yours for the journey of childhood,

June Rempel

Parents as Teachers
Parents as Teachers is a voluntary and free program sponsored by the Maize USD 266 district. It is designed for all families with children prenatal to 36 months living in the Maize School District.
Mission: To provide the information, support, and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life. To enroll click here.

Personal Visit Guidelines: Your certified parent educator looks forward to the privilege of serving your family. The state funding requirement of twelve personal visits during the year makes it very important to keep all scheduled visits. Cancellations due to emergencies or illness are unavoidable. Given this, it is requested that the following suggestions be considered:
  • Contact your parent educator as soon as possible to reschedule a cancelled visit. Please be flexible. Some visits may need to be rescheduled during lunch.
  • Personal safety is an important concern for everyone. To assist your parent educator, please leave outdoor lights on after dark and clear ice and snow from entrances.
  • Personal visits are most effective when the room is free from distractions. Turn off TVs, stereos, and electronic equipment. Secure pets away from the home visit area.
  • If your parent educator accidentally leaves a toy or book on a home visit, please let her know as soon as possible by leaving a message for her at the office, 722-3105.

Starlets is beginning soon! We still have openings in our classes. Starlets is a preschool where parents and children can participate together. The preschool sessions meet once a week during the school year, with a licensed teacher. Early literacy and math skills are emphasized to provide children with foundational skills for success in kindergarten and beyond. The Starlets program is a one time fee of $35 and is open to all families in the Maize School District with a child who is 3-5 years old when the school year begins.
Mid January we will have a new Starlets class for children who have turned three September 1, 2019 - December 31, 2019. Enrollment is happening now. That class will be on Tuesdays from 9 AM - 10:15 AM and is $20 for the semester. Please email Erin White at  ewhite@usd266.com  if you are interested.
