We hope everyone enjoyed spring break!

The month of April will be busy with State Assessments for our 3rd - 5th graders. Since we didn’t take them last year, it is new for our 3rd and 4th graders. Please see the schedule below and have your child here each day so they can take the assessments with their class. We will be giving make-ups to students on Thursdays and Fridays as needed.
April 13 & 14 – 5th grade Science assessments
April 20 & 21 – 3rd & 4th grade ELA assessments
5th grade ELA or Math assessments
April 27 & 28 – 3rd & 4th grade Math assessments
5th grade ELA or Math assessments

Please remember that we are available if you have concerns regarding your child’s teacher placement for next year. We do not take teacher requests; however, we are available to discuss your child’s needs. We do not make the placements for the intermediate centers.

In May we will share information to our 4th and 5th graders about the new intermediate schools.

If you are interested in having your child tutored over the summer, we have a list of teachers in the district who provide tutoring for a fee. If you would like a copy of the list, contact us and we will send you the information.

Also if you are moving or not returning to the district—please let the office know at 722-8230. It helps us with class placements. Thanks!

Hope you all had a wonderful spring break. We just finished with our bowling unit.

Throughout April we will begin with some physical fitness activities, as well as striking with long and short handled implements. Then we will be fitness testing to see progress over the year!

Grades for the 3rd quarter are going in soon and you can check them in skyward. Hopefully this month gives us some great weather so we can get outside! Stay Moving!
Cheryl Rodriguez Nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year
Cheryl Rodriguez, MES Kindergarten Teacher, was a top 3 finalist for the Region IV Kansas Teacher of the Year. Rodriguez was the recipient of the Celebrating Excellence in Education Award for Maize Elementary last spring.

She, along with nominees from other districts throughout our region were recognized at a virtual ceremony this past Saturday. She has been in education for 15 years, and has spent the last 5 years with the Maize district.

Congratulations, Mrs. Rodriguez!
Count Your Kid In Preschool Screening Clinic
Friday, April 16, 2021
The Kansas Department of Education invites you to attend a free Count Your Kid In screening. The purpose of the screening is to assess children, age birth through five, in the areas of walking, talking, seeing, hearing, and learning. The staff will assist you in the identification of any needs your child may have, and in locating services to meet those needs. This is not a "Kindergarten Screening."
The screening will be held at:
St. Joseph Conway Springs
218 N 5th
Conway Springs, KS 67031

Call 794-8641 (Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:30pm) and schedule a FREE appointment. For children ages 0-5 that reside in the following districts: Maize, Burrton, Sedgwick, Renwick, Cheney, Conway Springs, Clearwater, Goddard, Valley Center.

Future screenings will be held May 7, 2021 at Cheney Elementary, and in June. The June date and location is still to be determined.
Are You Moving?
Please let the MES office know if your child or children will not be returning to the Maize School District next year. This helps us with 2021-2022 planning. Thank you for your assistance!

Important Information
Start Times & Transportation
Our school day starts at 8:45 am every day. Student drop off begins at 8:35 am. It is important that students are not dropped off prior to that time. This is a matter of safety as there are no staff members supervising until 8:35 am. Thank you for your cooperation.

If you need to drop your student off before this time, the YMCA has a latchkey program at MES. For more information, please call the YMCA at 316-264-1610.

Students who arrive after 8:50 am will be counted tardy. If a student is brought late to school, the parent must come in and sign them in on the clipboard in the vestibule.

Please call the office at 316-722-8230 if your child is going to be absent or if you have a transportation change.  For student safety, please let the office know of a transportation change before 3:00 pm.

If your student is riding a different bus home with a friend, a note is required from both sets of parents. These need to be given to the office for Mr. White to sign and can then be given to the bus driver.
New Policies
Masks will be worn by all staff and students. At this time, no visitors are allowed into the building during the school day.

Deliveries & Invitations
Please be aware that school district policy does not allow us to accept flowers, lunch or other deliveries to students at school. Please contact your student's teacher to arrange a time to celebrate a special occasion with treats, etc.

BOE policy does not allow party invitations to be distributed at school. Please refer to the Skyward Family Access Student Directory or your classroom directory for student addresses.
Food Service
USD 266 uses the Skyward Food Service and RevTrak fee payment systems. Please check your email and phone numbers in Skyward, so you may be alerted when your child only has 2 lunches left. Parents receive an email when your child has $5.00 left in their account. Parents receive a 2nd email after your child has 1 lunch left. You will also receive a 3rd email when your child has a zero balance.

Parents may keep as large a balance as they wish in a child's account. If the student doesn't have enough in his/her lunch account to cover a meal, the account will be charged for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk if the student chooses to take one. No meal charges will be allowed and we are not allowed to go into one child's account to pay for a sibling.

Daily lunches are $2.50 each and extra milk is .40 cents. Lunch menus can be found online at usd266.com.

If you have any questions regarding Skyward and the RevTrak system, please call our school office. We want every child to have a good lunch, every day!
