Principal's Message
Happy New Year MES Panther Family!

We are rolling right along after having a glorious two-week vacation over the Holidays. I hope that time was full of smiles, laughter, memory making and relationship building opportunities. Now it’s time to bring this year home as we work together to help our students experience success!

The second semester was kicked-off in grand fashion at the PTO’s annual new year Jammin’ In the Gym event. It was a great evening for our kids and families to have fun together. The games, music, staff challenges, and balloon drop were just a few of the highlights of the night. A HUGE thank you to our PTO for planning and facilitating this event. These volunteers are so impressive, but their focus is simply to give our MES families and students the best elementary school experience possible. It’s our pleasure to partner with these fine people. Thank you to all of you who brought your students that evening. You could’ve done a lot of other things, but I appreciate you making this a priority.

January is a very busy month at MES! We began the year with Jammin’ In the Gym and will end the month with our annual Snowed In family night January 30, from 5:30-7:15. This will be an evening for the whole family, with activities planned throughout the building from 5:30-7:00 focused on reading, math, art and science. The evening will come to an end in the gym as we gather in the gym to pick the winners of each of the raffle baskets! No show this year, just a quick wrap-up this time around. Speaking of that, thank you in advance for helping out with the raffle baskets if you’re able. All of the proceeds will go directly to the participating classrooms to be spent on instructional needs. We have raised an average of $3500 in past years, so thank you very much for your support! The kids benefit so greatly from your generosity!!

February will be here very soon, and there are two BIG events to keep on your calendar. The first event will be our Valentine’s Day parties on Friday, February 7. Morning Kindergarten will begin their party at 11:00 (parents can come to the classroom beginning at 10:40), and all other class parties will begin at 3:00 (parents can come to the classrooms beginning at 2:40). Thank you to all of you contributing to the fun that day!  The second MES event in February will be parent/teacher conferences February 12 and 13. You should hear from your students’ teachers in the near future regarding conference times. Thank you for making this important time a priority in your busy schedule. These conversations will set the course for the rest of the year, and we really do need to make this journey together in order to do what is best for our students.

It’s my pleasure to work with you for our students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you have. I can be reached at 722-8230 or [email protected]. Have a fantastic rest of the month!

Inclement Weather, Snow Day Notifications
snow-shovel.jpg
In the event of school being dismissed or canceled because of inclement weather, the district will send out an e-mail, phone notification, and -- for those who have opted to receive them -- a text message to the primary contact associated with both Family 1 and Family 2, if applicable, for each student. Those phone notifications will go out as early as 5:30 a.m. on the day of the closure. If a decision is made the night before to call off school, calls and texts will go out no later than 10:30 p.m.

It is wise to verify that we have your correct contact information on file. To do so,  please log on to Skyward Family Access  and click on "Student Info." If you are unsure how to log on to Skyward Family Access, please contact your child's school for assistance.

District officials will update the district's Web site ( www.usd266.com ),  official Twitter account (@maize266) , and  official Facebook page  as soon as the decision is made to call off school. We also will contact local media outlets about any closures. When in doubt, we encourage parents to verify school closings by consulting multiple official sources.

Similarly, in the event of an emergency in your child's school, the district will use the Blackboard Connect parent notification system to notify you of the situation and alert you to steps you need to take in order to reunite with your child. Communications would go to all contacts listed in Skyward Family Access "Family 1" and the main contact in "Family 2."

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great Holiday break. If you get a chance, start your kids on reading food labels and sorting foods into the food groups. We have recently learned some new bones and muscles and will continue until the end of February. This month we will be focusing on basketball skills for a few weeks, and a jump rope unit. Happy New Year, and cross your fingers for some more snow to sled on!

Nurse's Notes
With the weather changing, we have seen an increase in the number of children coming to the nurse’s office. Please remind your children to practice good hand washing, and to properly cover their coughs/sneezes. Parents, please stick to a daily scheduled bedtime that includes about 10 hours of sleep, provide three nutritious meals and two healthy snacks every day , and help them by getting their vaccinations to keep them healthy for school.

Please keep your children home if they are exhibiting any of the following symptoms: fever over 100.4 degrees, headache, general aches and pains, fatigue and weakness, continuous coughing, chest discomfort, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Fever MUST be gone WITHOUT the use of a fever reducing medication such as Tylenol (Acetaminophen) or Motrin (Ibuprofen)) for a full 24 hours before student is to return to school. Just a reminder that we do not have a supply of Tylenol or Ibuprofen here at school. We can only give medications that parents have supplied along with a signed document.

SKYWARD HEALTH INFORMATION
It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to update medical information and contact numbers in Skyward Family Access during enrollment and throughout the school year. Teachers, coaches, and other school staff rely on Skyward for important health information like asthma, seizures, diabetes, and food allergies. In addition to updating Skyward, the parent/guardian must also personally communicate this information to the school nurse who will educate and train the appropriate staff. If parents and/or the student have questions regarding school guidelines and policies in keeping students safe and healthy at school, please contact the school nurse.

Thank you all for all your help in keeping your child healthy and safe for school.

Box Tops For Education
Thank You and Please Keep Them Coming!
Please keep your clipped Box Tops coming - especially with Thanksgiving preparations! We appreciate these so much. Thank you for all of them that have been sent so far this year!

Reminders for the School Year
WatchDOG T-Shirts
We think we might be missing a few youth size WatchDOG shirts. If you have one that accidentally made it to your home, could you please return it back to the school as soon as possible. We know it's hard to remember sometimes at the end of the day!

Bus Riders
If there is a change in your bus transportation that involves riding a different bus with another child, a child riding home with your child, or getting off the bus at a different stop, we need a note from the parent of EACH child involved in the change. All parties must have a note. Have your child bring the note to the office, we'll get them signed by Mr. White or Mrs. Vincent and get them back to your kids to get to the bus driver. Thank you!

Our school day starts at 8:45 am every day. Student drop off begins at 8:35 am. It is important that students are not dropped off prior to that time. This is a matter of safety as there are no staff members supervising until 8:35 am. Thank you for your cooperation.

If you need to drop your student off before this time, the YMCA has a latchkey program at MES. For more information, please call the YMCA at 316-264-1610.

Students who arrive after 8:50 am will be counted tardy. If a student is brought late to school, the parent must come into the office and sign them in.

The district dismisses students 40 minutes early every Wednesday to accommodate the Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). The teachers participate in the PLC to discuss curriculum, instructional strategies, data review, technology training, etc.  School is dismissed at 3:20 pm every Wednesday.

Please call the office at 316-722-8230 if your child is going to be absent or if you have a transportation change.   For student safety, please let the office know of a transportation change before 3:00 pm, and before 2:30 pm on Wednesdays.

If your student is riding a different bus home with a friend, a note is required from both sets of parents.  These need to be given to the office for Mr. White to sign and can then be given to the bus driver.
Deliveries & Invitations
Please be aware that school district policy does not allow us to accept flowers or other deliveries to students at school. Please contact your student's teacher to arrange a time to celebrate a special occasion with treats, etc.

BOE policy does not allow party invitations to be distributed at school. Please refer to the Skyward Family Access Student Directory or your classroom directory for student addresses.

Food Service
USD 266 uses the Skyward Food Service and RevTrak fee payment systems. Please check your email and phone numbers in Skyward, so you may be alerted when your child only has 2 lunches left. Parents receive an email when your child has $5.00 left in their account. Parents receive a 2nd email after your child has 1 lunch left. When your child doesn't have any money in the account, we have your child go to the office and call you. Please put money into the account that day. You will also receive a 3rd email when your child has a zero balance.

Parents may keep as large a balance as they wish in a child's account. If the student doesn't have enough in his/her lunch account to cover a meal, the account will be charged for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk if the student chooses to take one. No meal charges will be allowed and we are not allowed to go into one child's account to pay for a sibling.

Daily lunches are $2.45 each and extra milk is .40 cents. Feel free to join your student for lunch. Please notify the front office or your child's teacher of the day you are coming. Lunches are $3.65 for adults; please bring exact change as adult lunches cannot be taken from your child's account. Lunch menus can be found online at  usd266.com .

If you have any questions regarding Skyward and the RevTrak system, please call our school office. We want every child to have a good lunch, every day!
