March 2021
Principal's Message
Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

We are off and running into March! Don’t forget to set your clocks forward an hour on Sunday March 14th at 2:00 am for Daylight Savings Time. Spring Break follows on March 15th – 19th. Term 3 will conclude on Friday, March 26th.

AimsWeb scores should have come home with your student last week. Those math and English benchmarks should reflect fall and winter scores and are available via Skyward. If you have questions regarding these scores, please contact your child’s math or English teacher. Teachers are using this data to inform instruction and address individual needs as we finish up the school year. Our immediate focus is to address any areas of concern during class. Students failing multiple classes are required to attend Mav Time during the last 30 minutes of each day. Other students are encouraged to seek help from their teacher(s) during EnCor.

Kansas State Assessments will take place during the second week in May. Teachers will soon provide students with specific dates for testing in their classrooms. Attendance is extremely important during testing, so please schedule any appointments around the testing schedule. Make sure that your child is getting enough rest each night. Our students need food to fuel their brains during testing, so encourage them to eat a balanced breakfast. Let your child know that you are aware of the testing. Encourage him/her to do well by writing a positive note.

Water fountains are still unavailable to students with the exception of the refillable water stations. Therefore, we are in need of water bottles for some of our students. If you would be willing to donate or provide refillable containers, please contact our front office. It is vital for our students to drink plenty of water so we have provided cups/bottles all year for our students and will continue to do so. Please continue to send a drinking container with your child.

With the limited number of bus riders, we are experiencing a higher volume of traffic. Please do not pick your child up on Silver Fox Road. We have school resource officers assisting along with additional traffic guards. Overall, things are running smoothly but we will continue to address potential changes to make this process as efficient and safe as possible. Thank you for doing your part.

Thank you for your continued support of MSMS! Please let us know how we can be of assistance to you or if you have suggestions for our continued improvement.

Doing what is best for kids,
Cort Haynes
Principal

2021-2022 Immunization Requirements

In order to comply with Kansas immunization requirements for the 2020-2021 school year your student may need a Tdap booster and/or one dose of meningococcal ACWY vaccine.
Tdap: one single dose of Tdap is required at 7th grade
Meningococcal ACWY: one dose required at 7th grade and second dose at 11th grade

Please check with your provider to see if your student has received these immunizations. If so, please send a copy to Robyn Friederich, the school nurse at [email protected]
2021-2022 Enrollment for Current 6th and 7th graders

Online enrollment opens today, Monday, March 1st and closes Monday, March 8th. During this timeframe, all current 6th and 7th grade students will need to log-in to Skyward (using either student or parent ID) and enroll in their elective courses for next year. Counselors will input all core classes for students, and students will simply select three elective (1.5 credits) courses in Skyward. Students may do this at home or during Encor. You may view the course booklet and directions for enrolling by going to the MSMS website or clicking on the link below.

If your student is interested in applying for Yearbook or Newspaper, this class does require an application, which is also on the website or the link below. Please direct any yearbook questions to Mrs. Self ([email protected]).

Students currently enrolled in the Remote Flex and Remote Rigorous learning models will also enroll in elective classes. Video tutorials will be shared via parent/guardian email the first week of March and also pushed out via the Counselor’s Corner Google Classroom for students to view. It will also be posted on our website
We encourage parents to work with students during this process and be aware of courses students are enrolling in. If you have specific questions or concerns about your student’s placement in math or reading, please contact your student’s current teacher for this subject. Please contact the counseling office if you have any further questions!

2021 Track Season

We will begin Track season on Monday & Wednesday, March 8 & 10, with all BOYS and on Tuesday & Thursday, March 9 & 11, with all GIRLS. This will give the athletes the opportunity to try out for field events and be timed in 100m, 200m and 400m runs.

Practices will begin immediately after school and end at 4:30pm. On Wednesdays, the athletes will attend Athletic Study Hall from early release till practice begins. There will not be any practices during Spring Break. We will return to practicing with BOYS on Monday, March 22, and GIRLS on Tuesday, March 23, and continue to alternate days.

The Track Season Calendar will be posted on the Track website. Parents and athletes may email [email protected] or [email protected] to be added to an informational email list. Be sure to put the athletes name and grade in the Subject Line.
Winter Conditioning

Coach Ruzich will continue with Winter Conditioning after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March 4th. Students report to the Gym Lobby immediately after school to check in. They choose how fun to walk/run and return back to the gym lobby to check back in before going home. This is a great opportunity to build up a bit of endurance prior to the start of the Tennis and Track season. We wind up at the latest by 3:30pm and those that finish earlier may head home then.
2022 World Language Trip

World Languages is excited to invite our students and families to our virtual meeting on March 11 at 7:00 pm! Finally, everything looks like we will be able to open our eyes again to the world; we will have our traditional trip during summer 2022. This time we will have two different trips, not just one. Yes! You are going to be able to choose between Ireland and Scotland in June 2022 and Japan in July the same summer. Traditionally we have just one destination per year so this is a great opportunity. During the meeting, we will have all the information for both trips and the beautiful places and highlights that we will visit. Please, email me to receive more information and the zoom link for our meeting.

Remember that this is an open invitation for all our MSMS community! My email is [email protected]

MSMS Traffic Map & Information

"Crosswalks: If your child walks or rides a bicycle to school, we ask that they utilize the designated crosswalk areas which are outfitted with flashing lights. Dark mornings and high volume traffic create visibility issues. Walkers/Riders must ensure that the lights are flashing before crossing the street. Thank you for addressing this with your student."

Important Reminders

  • Remember to furnish the office with a copy of any legal documentation in regard to custody issues.
  • If your student is going to be tardy to school, they are allowed three parent excused tardies per semester, not including medical excuses with notes. Please call the school if your student is going to be late for any reason.
  • KS State Law requires notes for medical absences. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc.
  •  If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please remember that we cannot pull your student out of class until you have come into the office to sign them out.
  • Just a reminder that the school district does not provide any type of health or accident insurance for injuries incurred by your child at school. The school district makes insurance available to those who wish to purchase it on a voluntary basis. Forms may be obtained in each school office.
  • Please check your student's lunch account balance in Skyward Family Access regularly to be sure they have enough money for breakfast and/or lunch.
