Principal's Message
Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

Welcome back! Truly - welcome back! Our staff was thrilled to be back together. The eyes of our teachers lit up as we reconnected after several months apart; we are no different than our students. We eagerly anticipate our students walking back through our doors on September 8th and 9th. Among the many things that we have come to appreciate a bit more is Community. Our 2020-21 MSMS community will include several new staff members. Please welcome our new teachers Kara Buck, Patty Kirkpatrick, Andre Silva, and Hillary Thackery. New staff members include Sara McAsey (secretary), Robyn Friederich (Nurse), and Taylor Tyler (Nurse para). Additional information about our new Mavericks can be found in this month’s newsletter.

We celebrated our second consecutive year as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School for 2019-20. We understand the value of relationships. Student and Staff connections will be the primary focus as we resume after so much time away. Albeit a nontraditional start of the year, we understand the importance of human connection, even more so.
Intentional connection and communication with our families will be critical as we begin the year in a hybrid learning format. Our teachers are working hard to create a learning platform that is manageable, rigorous, and appropriate for our students to navigate while at school and at home.

Students will receive letter grades for each of their classes. All Mavericks will be expected to complete assignments on days when they are working remotely and participate in daily Zoom meetings with their EnCor teachers. The Kansas State Department of Education is requiring a meaningful connection between students and a staff member for each day that students are learning remotely. This connection will be made at 2:05 pm each day whether we are in a hybrid or remote learning environment. KSDE is also requiring all students to complete learning logs for each day they are not physically at school. Therefore, students must record 6 hours of a learning activity for three days a week. These electronic forms must be signed by a parent and student and then collected by the EnCor teacher. We will share more information on this topic when school resumes.

We will conduct temperature checks on all students before they are allowed to enter the building. If they are sick, we ask that you please keep them at home. Please review our school district's Daily Self Assessment. As established by our school board, students must wear a protective mask each day. Mask breaks will be given by each teacher throughout the day. We fully intend to have all Mavericks back in our building at the same time as soon as possible. In order to accomplish this we must take the appropriate health measures necessary to achieve this. We appreciate your cooperation.

I look forward to meeting your family and sharing in the success that this school year brings. Please contact the school if we can be of assistance to you.

MSMS Principal

Important Info for this Year

We also encourage all students to bring a water bottle as the water fountains will be turned off. Refillable filtered water stations will be available to all students. All bottles must have a lid.

Since we will not assign lockers this year, students will carry backpacks to each class. Students who bring a lunch to school may carry it with them or place it in a cubby in our cafeteria.

We will restrict visitor access to our building as much as possible as a health precaution. We will not be able to accept food deliveries to the school like we have in the past. Please try to limit dropping off items that have been forgotten. If you do need to drop off an item, we have set up a table in the entryway to the office. Please put your students name on the item and leave it on the table, we will call your student down to pick up the item.

Any non-district employee who enters our building must have their temperature checked and complete a health assessment prior to leaving the office area.
Nurse's Corner

Health Screenings

Students will have hearing or vision screenings during the school year as required. 6th and 8th grade students will have vision screening. 7th grade will have hearing screening. Students new to the district will receive both hearing and vision screenings. Parents will need to write a note to the school nurse ONLY if they do NOT want their child screened. Results will ONLY be sent home if further testing is needed. Screenings are very basic and are not meant to take the place of professional evaluations.

Immunizations for 7th graders

7th graders are required to have a Tdap booster and meningococcal (MCV4). Please send the updated record to the school nurse as soon as possible.

Robyn Friederich is our new School Nurse here at MSMS. Robyn is originally from Liberal, Kansas - born and raised! She and her family recently moved to the Wichita area last summer for my husband's job. Prior to moving here I was a School Nurse for 15 years with USD 480 in Liberal - the last 3 of those years was spent in one of the new middle schools. My husband and I have 3 children. Dustin (24), Dane (22), and Ella (15). We also have a very spoiled dog named Bear.

MSMS PTO

Welcome to the new school year! We cannot wait to come alongside the staff and students at MSMS this upcoming school year despite the new challenges we will be faced with. We will start the year off by selling apparel September 2 and 3 in front of the school during Meet Your Teacher night. We have lanyards, decals, hoodies, t-shirts, masks, water bottles, headbands, and more. The proceeds from the sales go right back into our school to support our students and teachers, so come get some Mav gear!

We partnered with the school this summer and have an awesome display for the south side of our chain link fence coming, so be looking for that!

Keep an eye out for information about our fall fundraiser as well as other upcoming activities.

MSMS Traffic Map & Information

"Crosswalks: If your child walks or rides a bicycle to school, we ask that they utilize the designated crosswalk areas which are outfitted with flashing lights. Dark mornings and high volume traffic create visibility issues. Walkers/Riders must ensure that the lights are flashing before crossing the street. Thank you for addressing this with your student."
