Principal's Message
Cort Haynes
MSMS Principal

We celebrated many things during the month of March. Our Orchestra, Band, and Vocal students performed very well at their respective Wichita Suburban League Music Festivals. Our Science Olympiad Team qualified for State which will take place on the campus of Wichita State University this Saturday, April 2nd. We hosted all 270 students of our incoming 7th grade class from Maize South Intermediate on Wednesday. Our Maverick Ambassadors helped us highlight the outstanding culture that they are a part of.

State Assessments will be completed this month along with AimsWeb testing. Please be sure to review the attached testing calendar. We appreciate your support at home in helping them be at their best for these tests. Students need to get plenty of sleep, eat a good breakfast, and be encouraged by loved ones. We will utilize this data as we consider academic placement and support for each student.

On Wednesday, April 27 our 8th grade class will participate in a civic engagement with our community. This Mavs on a Mission will take students around the community to assist in partnerships with local businesses. The 7th grade students will remain at MSMS and conduct activities that promote community engagement. They will be writing notes of gratitude, working with mentor students from MSHS, and participating in team-building activities.

The end of the school year presents a perfect opportunity to talk about two of our character traits: Grit and Optimism. Reminding our students that hard work and believing in the best possible outcome are paramount in education and in life. As always, thank you for your continued support of MSMS.

With the end of the school year right around the corner, I wanted to remind you of some important dates:
·        Bull Rush - Friday, May 20 - Maize South High School Football Stadium

·        Mavs Got Talent Show - Monday May 23rd (8:30 – 10:30 am) - Maize South High School Auditorium

·        Last Day of School - Tuesday, May 24
8th Grade Celebration – May 24 - Details TBD - Communication will be shared via email with all 8th grade parents.

Adding value,
Cort Haynes
Principal

2022 SUMMER DRIVER EDUCATION
Enrollment Information and Mandatory Parent/Student Meeting

USD 266 Maize Schools will once again offer summer driver education. Any student who turns 14 on or before Sunday, May 1, 2022 and has or will graduate 8th grade by June 1st will be eligible to enroll in summer driver education.
Instead of meeting with students face to face for the classroom portion this year, students will complete the coursework online through Google Classroom. Students will have 31 days (April 13th - May 13th) to complete the online coursework. Students will also complete at least five, one hour driving sessions starting no earlier than May 30th (schedule to be determined after class begins). We prefer that students get an instructional permit at the DMV in advance of the class and spend as much time as possible driving in safe locations with their parents. Practicing with parents before class starts is a plus considering that driver education is only five hours of driving.
Enrollment will be offered on a first come, first serve basis with enrollment limited to the first 200 students to register. Enrollment registration will open at 8:00 AM on Friday, April 1st, 2022 and will close on Monday, April 11, 2022 or when enrollment capacity has been reached. To register go to https://forms.gle/KSyVYSH93DvjSSo78 (form not accessible until April 1st).
Mandatory Enrollment Meeting
The first 200 students to register will receive a Google invite to attend the mandatory enrollment meeting on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 6:00 PM in the Maize South High School Auditorium. A parent or guardian and the student MUST commit to attending this meeting. Failure to attend the meeting will result in the student being dropped from the class. At the meeting, we will discuss the driving schedule, the Kansas Driver's Handbook Test, online class expectations, answer questions regarding the online enrollment form, collect the $200 enrollment fee, administer eye tests (please bring corrective eyewear if needed), and have you sign the enrollment forms. Students will need to bring any type of license or permit they might already have to the meeting.
The cost of summer driver education is $200 with payment due in full on the date of the meeting. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunches may apply for waived fees during the enrollment process. No registrations or late payments will be accepted after the mandatory enrollment meeting on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.

Kansas Driver Handbook Test
Students who don’t have a valid instruction permit or who have an instruction permit that will expire prior to the end of the summer drivers education will be required to take the Kansas Driver Handbook Test. This test will be administered in person at a location to be determined the week after the enrollment meeting. Students who are required to take the test must pass the Kansas Handbook Test at a minimum Mastery Level of 80% in order to complete the course. The student will be given three proctored opportunities to successfully complete this test. For a digital copy of the Kansas Driver Handbook, please click the link below. Print copies of the handbook may be purchased at any local Drivers License Exam Station.
Students and parents with questions are encouraged to contact Curtis Klein at 316-462-8012 or by email at [email protected]

Important Reminders

  • Remember to furnish the office with a copy of any legal documentation in regard to custody issues.
  • If your student is going to be tardy to school, they are allowed three parent excused tardies per semester, not including medical excuses with notes. Please call the school if your student is going to be late for any reason.
  • KS State Law requires notes for medical absences. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc.
  •  If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please remember that we cannot pull your student out of class until you have come into the office to sign them out.
  • Just a reminder that the school district does not provide any type of health or accident insurance for injuries incurred by your child at school. The school district makes insurance available to those who wish to purchase it on a voluntary basis. Forms may be obtained in each school office.
  • Please check your student's lunch account balance in Skyward Family Access regularly to be sure they have enough money for breakfast and/or lunch.

Thanks for your help!
