MAIZE unified school district 266

April 2021
Principal's Message
Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

We celebrated many things during the month of March. Our Scholar’s Bowl team performed very well at their respective meets. Our Science Olympiad Team qualified seven members for State competition. These competitions have been conducted virtually this year. The band is set to conduct an in-person concert on April 1st in our gymnasium. In the face of challenges and unordinary circumstances, our students and teachers have demonstrated grit. The success that we have experienced seems a little sweeter this year!

State Assessments for 6-8th grade Math and English/Language Arts are set to begin the second week of May. The 8th grade Science assessment will kick these state tests off the week before. Our last round of AimsWeb benchmark testing is slated for the last week of April. This data will continue to help with class placements, informing instruction, and identifying necessary student supports. It's important that students are in attendance, eat breakfast, get plenty of sleep, and come prepared to complete the math and reading assessments. We will run on a normal bell schedule.

Our school district is finalizing plans for summer school. At MSMS, we are in the process of identifying our highest need students and will be contacting families soon. Please stay tuned for more information regarding summer school.

As we head down the home stretch of the school year, we are doing our best to provide as many activities for our students as possible. One of those activities is our 8th grade celebration. There is a meeting on Tuesday, April 6th at 6:30 pm in our cafeteria if you are interested in being a part of that planning committee. We are also working through year-end plans in hopes of providing some fun activities for our students.

The end of the school year presents a perfect opportunity to talk about two of our character traits, Grit and Optimism. Reminding our students that hard work and believing in the best possible outcome are paramount in education and in life. As always, thank you for your continued support of MSMS.

With limited bussing, we realize the higher volume of traffic during after school pick up. We have secured crossing guards and are utilizing our School Resource Officers for additional assistance. Please be sure that you are not picking your child up while out on the Silver Fox access road. From 2:20-2:50 pm, the far east entrance of the east parking lot is entrance only. When approaching from Tyler road, only the right lane is permitted to make a right turn into the parking lot. Once you turn into the parking lot, you may move over into the left lane of waiting vehicles. The left lane of westbound Silver Fox cars should continue straight ahead. We do intend for eastbound Silver Fox traffic to be able to turn into that far east entrance and stay in the left lane once in the parking lot. However, in order to keep traffic moving, our SRO has had to deny this left turn off of Silver Fox.
If you choose to wait in line while in the middle of the parking lot, please be mindful of parked cars that need to pull out of a parking stall. If you are in a hurry, we ask that you utilize the far north traffic lanes while in the east parking lot.

We ask for your continued patience during pick up. It is only taking 10-12 minutes for our parking lot to clear out. Please drive safely and be on the lookout for our students. We appreciate your attention to this matter.

World Languages is excited to invite our students and families to our virtual meeting on March 11 at 7:00 pm! Finally, everything looks like we will be able to open our eyes again to the world; we will have our traditional trip during summer 2022. This time we will have two different trips, not just one. Yes! You are going to be able to choose between Ireland and Scotland in June 2022 and Japan in July the same summer. Traditionally we have just one destination per year so this is a great opportunity.
