February 2019
Principal's Message
Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

On the heels of our Great Kindness Challenge week, we charge into February! The students enjoyed dress up days and focusing on the little things that make a big difference. Some of the activities included: a group of our students visiting Brooks Middle School to pass out treats and visit with their students, we also invited their students to come visit us at MSMS, notes were written and delivered to Meals On Wheels, Kay Club students made staff treat bags, candy grams were delivered to MSHS and many other kind deeds were accomplished during our Kindness Challenge Week. Building character and fostering positive life-long skills is not only a state requirement, but an emphasis that we value above all at MSMS!

Next week we will have our 2nd semester Parent/Teacher Conferences.
The times are as follows:

Wednesday February 12th 4:00pm-8:00pm
Thursday February 13th 12:00pm-8:00pm NO School
Friday February 14th NO School
Monday February 17th NO School due to Professional Dev. Day
We look forward to seeing you at conferences!

Thank you for your continued support of MSMS! Please let us know how we can be of assistance to you or if you have suggestions for our continued improvement.

Doing what is best for kids,
Cort Haynes
Principal

2020-2021 Enrollment for Current 6th and 7th graders

Middle school counselors will talk with all current 7th graders on Friday, February 7th during Encor and all current 6th graders on Monday, February 10th to explain the 7th/8th grade enrollment process for next year.

Online enrollment opens Monday, February 10th and closes Wednesday, February 19th. During this timeframe, all current 6th and 7th grade students will need to log-in to Skyward (using either student or parent ID) and enroll in their elective courses for next year. Counselors will input all core classes for students, and students will simply select three elective (1.5 credits) courses in Skyward. Students may do this at home or during Encor. You may view the course booklet and directions for enrolling by going to the MSMS webpage and clicking on “Counselors” at the top, then “Enrollment” on the left. Please contact the counseling office if you have questions!
If your student is interested in applying for Yearbook or Newspaper, this class does require an application, which is also on the website. Yearbook applications are due no later than March 6th. Students should turn these in to Mrs. Self, Mr. Slattery, or the front office.
We encourage parents to work with students during this process and be aware of courses students are enrolling in. If you have specific questions or concerns about your student’s placement in math or reading, please contact your student’s current teacher for this subject. Please contact the counseling office if you have any further questions!

2020 SUMMER FACE TO FACE DRIVER EDUCATION
Mandatory Parent/Student Meetings and Enrollment Information

USD 266 Maize Schools will once again offer summer face to face driver education. Any student who turns 14 on or before Monday, June 1, 2020 and has or will graduate 8th grade by June 1st will be eligible to enroll in summer driver education. Students will attend two weeks of classes in the Maize South High School Auditorium starting Monday, June 1, 2020 (note: there will be no classes on Friday, June 5 th due to Kansas Special Olympics taking place on the Maize South Campus) and ending on Thursday, June 11, 2020 from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm each day. Students will also complete at least five, one hour driving sessions (schedule to be determined after class begins). We prefer that students get an instructional permit at the DMV in advance of the class and spend as much time as possible driving in safe locations with their parents. Practicing with parents before class starts is a plus considering that driver education is only five hours of driving.
Two mandatory enrollment meetings will be held in late April. Parents and students must attend one of the two meetings. The first meeting will be on Monday, April 27 th at 6:00 pm in the Maize South High School Commons Area. The second meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 29 th at 6:00 pm in the Maize High School Commons Area. Eye tests will be given at both of these meetings. Enrollment forms will be emailed out to parents during the month of April. Students will need to bring any type of license or permit they might already have to the meeting.

The cost of summer driver education is $200 with payment due in full on the date of the meetings. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunches may apply for waived fees during the enrollment process.  No registrations or late payments will be accepted after the last parent meeting on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 .
Students and parents with questions are encouraged to contact Curtis Klein at 316-462-8048 or by email at  cklein@usd266.com .

Join us on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure to explore Tokyo – the modern-day center of pop culture and business; Kyoto – the most traditional of Japan’s large cities; and more. Witness the country’s unsurpassed natural beauty from the window of the high-speed shinkansen train and in the majestic lakes and mountains of Hakone National Park.

Winter Conditioning

Coaches Ruzich, Moran, and Murphy are thrilled to have an average of 36 students each Wednesday afternoon come out to Winter Conditioning. Over half of the group are 6th graders! We are excited to have so many students interested in spending time on early release days to workout. We will continue meeting the next 4 Wednesdays and the last date of workouts will be March 4th since track begins for all 7th and 8th graders on March 9th or 10th. We will meet Wednesday, February 12th, prior to Parent-Teacher conferences...the students "begged" not to cancel so we WILL workout then.

MSMS Traffic Map & Information

"Crosswalks: If your child walks or rides a bicycle to school, we ask that they utilize the designated crosswalk areas which are outfitted with flashing lights. Dark mornings and high volume traffic create visibility issues. Walkers/Riders must ensure that the lights are flashing before crossing the street. Thank you for addressing this with your student."
