April 2021
Principal's Message
Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

We are in the home stretch. As we sprint toward the finish line, I would like to highlight a few remaining events and bid farewell to some very important people.

On Friday, May 14th our Student Council will host a Hawaiian themed dance. The dance will run from 6:30-8:30 pm and tickets will be sold during school hours for $5. Dodgeball is always a hit so we will “throw” that in as well. Masks will be worn at this event except when students are participating in the dodgeball activities. Kona Ice will be on hand along with a picture booth. The kids are ready to socialize!

On Friday, May 21st we will have a full day of activities. In the morning, students will participate in ‘Go Do It’ activities led by teachers. For these activities, students will choose from a list and participate in two activities designated by the staff. Sessions will include painting, dodgeball, arts/crafts, board games, and more. In the afternoon, we are excited to announce the return of our beloved Bull Rush. This will involve any 7th and 8th grader who qualified during their PE class this year. Start times will be staggered in order to spread participants out. We plan to begin with the 7th grade runners around 12:45. Masks will be worn at this activity except for those participating in the event. All students must be off of the Focus list, maintain good behavior, and have good attendance in order to take part in these activities.

For the third year in a row, MSMS was selected as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School! This is a direct reflection of our wonderful staff who value students and who work tirelessly to help them succeed academically and relationally. It’s not what we do, it's how we do it! Relationships are key.

The month of May is bittersweet. We are sad to see our 8th graders move on but are so excited to watch them excel in high school. It is also a point in the year where we wish farewell to departing staff members. All of our 6th grade staff will move to the new Maize South Intermediate School for the 21-22 school year. They have been a key ingredient in our success and we wish them all the best. Kim Pohl (6th grade math), Nancy Diskin (6th Social Studies), AC Poynter (8th Social Studies), and Diane Jourdan (Registrar) will all celebrate retirement after many outstanding years here in Maize. These folks have given so much to our district. We will certainly miss them and wish them the very best!

Taylor Gould (7/8th Leadworthy) will be the new assistant principal at Maize South Intermediate School. Tyler Slattery (8th English/Language Arts) will be moving to MSIS as a counselor. Alejandra Prendes (7/8th World Languages) has accepted a position with Maize Virtual Prep School. We will miss these Mavericks and wish them well. Once a Mav, always a Mav!

New Mavericks for the 2021-22 school year are:
Mindy Joseph – 7th Grade English/Language Arts
Jenny Moore – 7th Grade Math
Trish Begley – 7/8th Grade Leadworthy
Kristina Sander – 7/8th World Languages
Cortney Woodruff - 7/8th Choir

Have a wonderful summer!

Traffic

With limited bussing, we realize the higher volume of traffic during after school pick up. We have secured crossing guards and are utilizing our School Resource Officers for additional assistance. Please be sure that you are not picking your child up while out on the Silver Fox access road. From 2:20-2:50 pm, the far east entrance of the east parking lot is entrance only. When approaching from Tyler road, only the right lane is permitted to make a right turn into the parking lot. Once you turn into the parking lot, you may move over into the left lane of waiting vehicles. The left lane of westbound Silver Fox cars should continue straight ahead. We do intend for eastbound Silver Fox traffic to be able to turn into that far east entrance and stay in the left lane once in the parking lot. However, in order to keep traffic moving, our SRO has had to deny this left turn off of Silver Fox.
If you choose to wait in line while in the middle of the parking lot, please be mindful of parked cars that need to pull out of a parking stall. If you are in a hurry, we ask that you utilize the far north traffic lanes while in the east parking lot.

We ask for your continued patience during pick up. It is only taking 10-12 minutes for our parking lot to clear out. Please drive safely and be on the lookout for our students. We appreciate your attention to this matter.
Nurses Corner

End of the Year Reminders

Notices were mailed at the beginning of April to parents of students who may need a Tdap booster and/or one dose of the meningococcal ACWY vaccine. In order to comply with the 2020-2021 Kansas immunization requirements please check with your provider and send documentation to Robyn Friederich, the school nurse at [email protected]

If your student has medication in the nurse’s office it will be sent home with them the last week of school. Please remember Medication/ Treatment Authorization forms must be completed each year if your student needs to keep medication at school. Prescription medications require the form be completed by your student’s health care provider. Parents may complete the form for over-the-counter medications.
A copy of this form and further information regarding the USD 266 medication policy is available at: https://www.usd266.com/Page/4627

Please contact Robyn Friederich, the school nurse, at the email above or call 316-350-2508 if you have any questions.

Have a wonderful summer!

Washington DC Informational meeting

Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, US Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, Holocaust Museum. These are just a few of the sites we will be visiting when we travel to Washington DC next year.

An informational meeting will be held on Monday, May 17 at 7:00 pm at Maize South Middle School. The trip will be May 31-June 3, 2022 for all 7th and 8th grade students who would like to go. Contact Mr. Slaven ([email protected]) for information or questions. Don't miss out on the fun!
2022 World Language Trip

World Languages is excited to invite our students and families to our virtual meeting on March 11 at 7:00 pm! Finally, everything looks like we will be able to open our eyes again to the world; we will have our traditional trip during summer 2022. This time we will have two different trips, not just one. Yes! You are going to be able to choose between Ireland and Scotland in June 2022 and Japan in July the same summer. Traditionally we have just one destination per year so this is a great opportunity. During the meeting, we will have all the information for both trips and the beautiful places and highlights that we will visit. Please, email me to receive more information and the zoom link for our meeting.

Remember that this is an open invitation for all our MSMS community! My email is [email protected]

Important Reminders

  • Remember to furnish the office with a copy of any legal documentation in regard to custody issues.
  • If your student is going to be tardy to school, they are allowed three parent excused tardies per semester, not including medical excuses with notes. Please call the school if your student is going to be late for any reason.
  • KS State Law requires notes for medical absences. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc.
  •  If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please remember that we cannot pull your student out of class until you have come into the office to sign them out.
  • Just a reminder that the school district does not provide any type of health or accident insurance for injuries incurred by your child at school. The school district makes insurance available to those who wish to purchase it on a voluntary basis. Forms may be obtained in each school office.
  • Please check your student's lunch account balance in Skyward Family Access regularly to be sure they have enough money for breakfast and/or lunch.

Thanks for your help!
