Principal's Message
From the Principal

Greetings Maverick families, and Happy September! It’s hard to believe that we are wrapping up our fourth week of school already. It’s been a great start to the school year, and it is fantastic to be able to have all students back in the building. These first several weeks have certainly had some challenges. We appreciate your patience as transportation has worked through some hiccups to ensure bus arrivals and departures are timely. We also appreciate your patience and grace as we continue to prioritize student safety through our district Covid protocols. I am hopeful that as we continue through the year, things will get better!

The Back to School Carnival was a success. I would like to recognize and thank the Maverick Stampede, our football boosters, for organizing and sponsoring the event.

Our current enrollment will be turned in to the Department of Education and KSHSAA in the next two weeks. As of today, our student enrollment is 1,098. That is just under the 1,116 students that were attending at reporting time last year.

Parent Teacher Conferences are just around the corner. Conferences will be held on Thursday, September 23rd from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Teachers will be in their classrooms for in person conferences. Students, parents, and guardians are invited to meet with teachers to discuss student progress. If you prefer to have a virtual conference, we will offer Zoom conferences as well. Please contact your student’s teacher by email if you would like to schedule a virtual or phone conference. Due to conferences, students will not have school on Thursday, September 23rd or Friday, September 24th.

Homecoming week is coming up and we are excited for a return to some of our traditions that we have had in the past. September 27th - October 1st is Homecoming week and we will have several opportunities for students, families, and staff to show their Maverick pride. The Homecoming theme is Surf’s Up. Some of the events we are planning are themed dress up days, PowderPuff football, the Maverick Parade, multiple athletic events, and the Homecoming Dance to finish off the week following the football game Friday night.

The week after Homecoming, leading up to the Maize South vs. Maize football game on October 8th, Chick-fil-A is hosting a spirit week. The two schools will compete for the most food sales and the winning school will be awarded a monetary gift at the football game. I would invite you to visit the Chick-fil-A at 21st and Maize as often as possible from October 4th - 8th and let them know that you are supporting your Mavericks. Maize South can be identified in the special instructions section for online and app orders, and breakfast orders count for double sales!

I continue to look forward to a great year. Thank you to those who have reached out in the past month. I would invite you to continue reaching out to me with information, questions, concerns, feedback, or just to introduce yourselves.

Mavs Up!

College & Career Center
Greetings!

Our 2021-2022 College and Career Center calendar is complete for the year. We hope you are able to attend many of the events we have scheduled for this school year and encourage your students to take advantage of college campus visits we have scheduled.

Our first event is the annual College Career Fair which will take place on Monday, September 13th at the Maize Career Academy. Last year, over 30 colleges and each branch of the military were in attendance. This is a great opportunity for students and their parents to come out and speak with representatives regarding the admission and financial aid process.

The goal of the College & Career Office is to provide a variety of resources for students post secondary planning. Students are invited to use the college & career office as a resource to help navigate the college planning and application process as well as explore various career opportunities. Activities will be scheduled each month that will address the needs of our students and help them better informed choices about college and careers.

Office hours are all day Tuesday-Thursday. Joint parent/student appointments may be scheduled 7:00a - 7:00p for your convenience. To schedule an appointment, please email Lyn Brown at [email protected] or call my direct line at 316-462-8007.

Yearbook
Driver Education
USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education each term during the school year. The online driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful of the law; to learn basic driving skills; and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving. The instructors will provide critical experience to students; involve parents in the process, and foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. Students should be studying the Kansas Driver Handbook and be ready to take a handbook test at the start of the course. More detailed information on Online Driver Education can be found on the high school website, (click on Counselor, click on Driver Education).

Online Driver Education 2021-2022:   Students & Parents/Guardian must both attend the enrollment night in order to be in Online Dr. Ed. Each term class is limited to 50 students. Enrollment packets may be picked up in the counseling office or downloaded off the district website.

-         Term 2 October 18th      Student/Parent Enrollment Night 6:00pm MHS Commons

-         Term 3 January 10th      Student/Parent Enrollment Night 6:00pm MHS Commons

-         Term 4 March 21st          Student/Parent Enrollment Night 6:00pm MHS Commons

**Student and one Parent/Guardian will be required to attend the enrollment meeting. To help cut down on contact and foot traffic in the building do not bring siblings or friends to the meeting. It is recommended you wear a mask and social distance during the meeting. Please bring your enrollment packet, a writing pen, corrective eye wear (if needed) and any type of Kansas Permit/License you already have to the Enrollment Meeting**
School Year Reminders

  • Because students are not allowed to bring balloons or glass items on the bus, the Maize school district will not be accepting any flower, candy, cookie, or balloon bouquet deliveries to students.
  • If your student is going to be tardy to school, please call the office. They are allowed three parent excused 1st block tardies per year, after that they are subject to detention.
  • When a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the attendance office within 24 hours to verify the reason for the absence. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc., these visits won't count against your child's attendance. Medical notes can also be faxed to 462-8001.
  • If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please call the office with the time your child needs to be released. They will receive a pass ahead of time and can check themselves out at the requested time. The exception to this, is lunch time. If you wish to check your student out for lunch, a parent must come in and sign the student out. Parents are not required to sign students back in.
  • We have a "closed lunch" policy this year. Students will be expected to eat at school and no outside food may be delivered.
  • If your child is absent and will require homework, please email the teacher.

Thank you for your help with this. We appreciate it!
