District-Wide LOTE Competition
Highlights Student Talent
H armony Science Academy-Laredo hosted the 9th Annual LOTE Language District Competition. The LOTE (Language Arts Other Than English) competition offered Harmony San Antonio District students with an opportunity to showcase their language and performing arts skills by competing in poetry recitation, singing, and folk-dancing. Students utilized their English, Spanish, Turkish and other foreign language skills to perform in front of friends, family, teachers, staff and the community at large. They also performed for a panel of professionals with expertise
in the areas of language arts, dance, poetry and voice, who served as judges.
The LOTE Competition judges look on as dancing students exhibit their talent. Many thanks to all the judges for taking time out from their busy schedules to judge this year's student talent.
Harmony Laredo...Where Students Shine and Teachers Earn District Awards
B oth Ms. Villanueva , 4th grade Harmony School of Innovation ELA teacher and Ms. Tijerina, English 2, Harmony School of Excellence, earned the title of outstanding District Teacher of the Year award. They were selected among their peers as their respective campuses Teacher of the Year, then judged by a panel of judges at the district office based on pre-established criteria.

Additionally, Mr. Flores , seventh-grade math teacher, was named Teacher of the Year for the Harmony Science Academy campus. Congratulations to you and all your district peers who were also earned the Teacher of the Year title for each of the eight campuses in the Harmony Public Schools San Antonio District. Many thanks to all the nominated teachers!
C ongratulations to Harmony School of Excellence, who hosted their First
Power of the Sun 5-K. A total of 107 participants walked and ran through the
newly revitalized trail. The race was under the direction of Co-Race Directors:
Mr. Alfaro and Ms. Romanos . All profits from the race will benefit the high school’s Solar Car Club's initiative to build Laredo's first ever Solar car. 
H SE students had an opportunity to meet local business and community leaders at the school's Career Fair. The presenters answered questions, shared valuable insight and provided the students with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of future career opportunities.

Both Dr. Yasar , HPS-SA Superintendent and Ms. Lopez, HSA-Laredo Principal, award Mr. Flores with the Harmony Science Academy-Laredo Teacher of the Year Award. Congratulations Mr. Flores!

HSE-Laredo
Many thanks to Laredo Councilwoman Vielma, and event Co-Directors, HSE Robotics Coach Alfaro and Ms. Romanos , Campus Outreach Coordinator, HPS-Laredo, for all your hard work in helping to make the inaugural Harmony School of Excellence-Laredo Power of the Sun 5-K Race a success!  

This year's Career Day included KGNS-TV 8, morning anchor, Mindy Casso and Ramiro Saucedo , producer who enjoyed speaking with HSE students. Thank you for coming to the Career Fair !
HSA-Laredo
Congratulations to Harmony Science Academy-Laredo students Ken Y. and Matthew O . who placed 1st in the Environmental Engineering Junior Division at Regional Science Fair in Brownsville, TX. The pair made it to the state competition with their project "Can you make a water heater without electricity?"

HSA middle school students and their coaches and teachers were rockin' the streets of Laredo with their STEM Float! The athletes, cheerleaders and amazing students did a terrific job representing the school in the Washington's Birthday parade!
HSI-Laredo
The Harmony School of Innovation - Laredo 4th grade flag football team were honored by the Laredo City Council for having an undefeatefseason. Theu 2016 and 2017 Laredo (City) Champions!

Congratulations to the Predatechs Robotics Team who competed with 60 other teams and earned the 3rd Place Champions Award and 3rd Place Robot Performance Award at their Regional Championship tournament.
Under the direction of Mr. Borrego , the team earned the regional nomination for the FIRST Lego League Global Innovation Award. Way to go!
Harmony Brownsville: Dedicated Teachers and Talented Students Earn Recognition
M s. Poy, pictured with Principal Trevino, was named Harmony Science Academy Elementary School Teacher of the Year and Ms. Karatas , 10-12th grade math teacher, was named Secondary School Teacher of the year for Harmony School of Innovation - Brownsville. Thank you for your continued dedication to your students!
T he Harmony School of Innovation Middle School boys’ basketball team competed in the TSCAAL Final 4 of the State Tournament on February 10 in Buda, Texas. The team, under the coaching leadership of Mr. Fortaneli , finished the season in third place. Congratulations to the team! Together they earned the district and regional championship title, as well as being named state qualifiers.
B oth HSI and HSA participated in the Charro Days parade and festivities. Thank you to all the staff, parents and students who volunteered their time to work on the beautiful parade floats.
H SA student M. Mascorro made it to the regional spelling bee. After 30 spelling rounds, she prevailed in victory and competed in the 30th Annual Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee. She is no stranger to spelling bee competitions. In 2017, she competed against 50 spelling bee participants in the South Texas Region, and made it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington,
D.C., making it to round 3 of 4.
HSI-San Antonio: Outstanding Teachers, Astronauts, and Partnerships
H armony School of Innovation named
Ms. Ashley, 8th grade ELA Teacher of the Year for the secondary school, and Ms. Ferguson , kindergarten teacher, was named Elementary School Teacher of the year. Both these ladies are dynamic, passionate teachers who enjoy shaping the lives of their students through education. Continue success!

H SI received a special visit from retired astronaut Clayton Anderson , who
spent 30 years working for NASA, 15 as an engineer and 15 as an astronaut.
During his visit he read from his new book, " A is for Astronaut: Blasting
Through the Alphabet," and was happy to answer each student's questions about his time in space. The students enjoyed meeting him, learning from him and they enjoyed the book!
HSE-SA: Innovative Learning Environment, Parent Involvement and Student Art
H SE has named Ms. Hook , third-grade teacher, as Elementary Teacher of the Year. With 12 years of an educational background, she has implemented a student-centered classroom environment complete with hands-on learning and flexible seating options. Keep up the great work Ms. Hook!
C hoir Club Students were invited to sing the National Anthem at the Rampage Hockey Team’s Military Night celebration. Under the direction of Ms. Silva , the students rehearsed and sang beautifully in an arena full of friends, family and hockey fans. After their performance the group, along with PTO and parents, enjoyed the game.
U nder the direction of Ms. McMahan , HSE-SA art teacher, students created self-portrait works of art that were matted, framed and showcased for sale at the Student Art Show in February. Kuddos to Ms. McMahan, the school's PTO, staff and the artists (students) for all their hard work.

Mr. Donmez , District Office Director of Engagement attended the Student Art Show where his son created an adorable self portrait. The Student Art event has become a popular HSE event that takes much time and effort to prepare for. If you have not yet attended, try to make it to next school year's event! You'll be impressed by the talent these students possess.
HSA-SA: Engaged Teachers,
Student Involvement and STEM-Focused
M s. Oberheu was named Harmony Science Academy – San Antonio Teacher of the Year at a staff awards ceremony. Ms. Oberhue, is the 6-12. th grade Biomedical Pathways Teacher who is a PLTW Medical Interventions Master Teacher, who and brings years of professional experience to the classroom. She is an advocate for hands-on instruction and connecting the classroom to the community.
H SA - SA High School IMPACT Team students attended Confluence 2018 at The Witte Museum. Confluence is a youth water conference that attracts 1,000 students citywide and is the capstone event for IMPACT, a project based learning program hosted by San Antonio Water System. The students, under the leadership of Mrs. James, Engineering Teacher and PLTW Coordinator, showcased their IMPACT Team projects to include a drip irrigation system they worked on in two gardens at the San Antonio Zoo. The project will reduce the amount of water the zoo uses.
T he HSA Cheer Team, under the direction of volunteer parents and Mr. Bush , Campus Outreach Coordinator at HSA-SA participated in this year's MLK Walk.
HSA Principal , Mr. Cakir and District Director of Talent, Ms. Sanchez , recognize Ms. Oberhue at the awards staff meeting.

"The Zoo Crew" spent many hours conducting necessary research to ensure the success of the Zoo's irrigation system. Thank you Ms. James for all your support!

The Cheer Team showcased the new Harmony Public Schools banner at this year's MLK March.
