Ground Breaking Event for The Plumbers Local 130 UA - Union Parking Garage

The Plumbers Local 130, UA has been a proud and committed institution in the City of Chicago and West Loop neighborhood since 1927. On June 8, 2021, Local 130 broke ground on a 500-car, 8 story parking garage to service the 6,100 members as well as support restaurant and other neighborhood business.
PARKING GARAGE The Plumber’s Union Local 130 UA has been a proud and committed institution in the City of Chicago and West Loop neighborhood since 1927. Throughout that storied history, the Union has invested significant resources in our members as well as our community. That commitment to the Union and community continues in the currently $34 million, member-requested and member-supported 500-car, 8 story parking garage project to serve the 6,100 member-strong Union, as well as address a real need to alleviate the parking issues vocalized by the local residents and businesses. The proposed parking garage will replace a large portion of surface parking along W. Randolph Street, and has been designed with great care of the surrounding context and adherence to the City’s Ordinance and West Loop Guidelines.
The Plumbers Parking Garage benefits the West Loop neighborhood
a. There is significant demand for increased parking in the West Loop to support restaurants and other neighborhood businesses. Local 130 receives many calls each week asking about availability in the existing surface parking lot and the future parking garage development.
b. Retail/restaurant space will be included in the project along Randolph.
c. Extending the retail/restaurant corridor into the Local 130 property through the proposed first floor space will benefit residents in the neighborhood and businesses between Ogden and Ada.
The Plumbers Parking Garage will be constructed using Local 130 Members Dues Deductions, not funding from an outside developer
a. The Plumbers Parking Garage is being constructed primarily to meet the parking demand of Local 130 members for monthly union meetings, parking for commuting to and from jobsites in Chicago, and other large events at Local 130. These events are few, leaving the vast majority of parking spots open to rent by the surrounding neighborhoods.
b. Local 130 is financing the construction through a dues deduction paid by its members. The membership agreed to the deduction specifically to construct a parking garage.
