A place that loses its history loses its soul
Message From The Chairman

A special meeting of the Board took place on 29 June to consider several issues.

They were the Lease Renewal Agreement from the City and a plan to increase the days that the Center is open to the public. The City had proposed various options to consider for the renewal of the lease
on 31 August 2022. An option that presents the least fiscal impact was chosen by the Board. That option was referred to the City and City Council will hold a reading on 12 July, and then again on 9 August. There are no indications that there will be any difficulty in the final signing by your Chair.

Due to the Covid pandemic, the Heritage Center, like many organizations, has moved from a period of complete closure to one of a partial opening. The Center is currently open on Thursday, 10-4, and Saturday by appointment only. The Center has no paid employees. It is staffed entirely by volunteers under the supervision of our Information Technology Advisor and Collections Manager, and they are volunteers.
It became clear during the discussion that members of the Board believed that they should take a more active role. In a spirit of cooperation of all concerned, it was concluded that the Center had an obligation to become more visible in the community. The Information Technology Advisor and Collections Manager will recommend a plan to the Board at the July meeting.

In line with the need for increased visibility, the Heritage Center will host a Thursday Throw Back at Tapa Rio, 15 September. Mark your calendars!! It will be our first in 2+ years.
Stay tuned.

Have a great summer!

Jack A. Apperson, Chairman

FROM THE ARCHIVES

The 4th of July is a special day for all of us. Family gatherings, concerts, special events, and of course fireworks!

In 1980 there was also the great Rappahannock Raft Race! The ladies of the Fredericksburg Woman's Club took to the water on a raft exhibiting a flag inscribed " The Boston Tea Party. Tea'd off with taxes."

Time may march on, but some causes never change.
