December 23rd and 24th and 31st. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Need Volunteers?
Want to Help a Medical Student Succeed?
We are excited to be partnering with Brenau University and their clinical students. The students will need volunteer hours in the community to complete their course work. Additionally, the clinical students will be providing routine health screenings and educational presentations as part of their clinical rotations to partner agency guests. Students will be supervised by a qualified university faculty member as they provide these services on location of both GMFB programs and partner agency distributions. If you are interested in participating in this type of program or if you would like to sign up to provide a volunteer opportunity to one of the clinical students click the appropriate link below.
that Georgia Mountain Food Bank receives % of its food from retail donors. These donors are part of the Feeding America Network that GMFB is able to access. This means that these donors have committed to designate their food donations to Feeding America Network food banks and their partner agencies. This program is commonly known as The Perishable Recovery Program or the Enabled Program to partner agencies. Some partner agencies will be assigned to a local store to pick up these donations by the food bank.
December is National Root Vegetable and Exotic Fruit Month
While you may not have exotic fruits and root vegetables to offer, during the celebration, encourage your guests to explore the fresh produce offerings at your pantry. Then, find and print recipes to offer with their choices. Fruits and vegetables have a lot to offer and will enhance their meals. Root Vegetables and Exotic Fruits Month challenges you to try something new so be sure to make it a celebration!
"The Hope Ministry of St.John Baptist Church, was able to serve our community during COVID- 19 without closing our doors to the community. On Nov.13th we had a drive thru pick up and we decorated our bags. In the bags were Thanksgiving dinner staples along with a kitchen towel set, and it was beautiful! We were able to serve 61 with our drive thru. We thank the GMFB for making it possible." - Catherine Wilmont, Coordinator.

Healthy Tip Flyers Series
In partnership with Public Health we will be providing you with flyers promoting healthy tips and recipes that you can print off and provide to your guests at your distribution. They will be provided in both English and in Spanish. The series will run for 10 months. This resource and more are available in the Agency Toolkit on our website under Nutrition Resources folder. This is a great way to build relationships and a healthier community!
Due to calorie count and overall nutrition value, water-packed canned fruit is the healthiest choice. The heavy and light syrups are of little nutritional value other than calories and are very high in sugar. The fruit packed in juice contains significantly less added sugar than syrup-packed canned fruit. You can rinse the fruit prior to eating or using in a recipe.
In the event of an emergency
The best canned foods for emergencies and what you should be stocking up on:
Some of the best canned food options are beans, tuna, salmon, vegetables, and fruits.
In order to include carbohydrates and fiber in your diet, be sure to stock up on some non-canned items like oats, rice, quinoa, barley, or pasta.
Canned vegetables
While most vegetables are a naturally low-sodium food, certain canned varieties have added salt. Too much salt can increase your risk of high blood pressure and heart-related problems. If you do purchase canned canned vegetables, be sure to rinse them thoroughly to remove excess salt.
Canned meat
To reduce the “canned” flavor of mild-tasting canned meats like chicken, drain away as much liquid as you can before using the meat in a recipe that adds a lot of flavor.
GMFB will begin offering GNAP items on our inventory to agencies participating in the GNAP program. This is a great opportunity for agencies that would like to order GNAP product weekly and/or without minimum restrictions. There will be a section designated specifically for GNAP agencies on the inventory.
