Finances

Year-End tax Filing

It’s that time of year again. Most PTA tax returns are due November 15. We have several options for assistance this year.

  1. Visit California State PTA's Tax Filing Support Center for instructions and the forms to do it yourself.
  2. Watch this step-by-step video on how to file the required returns.
  3. Still need more help? California State PTA is offering tax filing appointments from November 7-9. These are for units that normally make less than $50,000 a year. Contact treasurer@capta.org to make an appointment.

Questions? Contact your council treasurer or Shawna Straw, Ninth District PTA treasurer

Membership

Got 15?

To be a PTA, you need at least 15 members. Remittance for the required minimum 15 members is due to Ninth District PTA by November 15. Check with your council PTA for their specific due date. Of course, don't stop at 15 members. The more members who join your PTA, the stronger your voice for kids.

Parliamentary Pointers

Are your Bylaws up to date?

If the association bylaws are more than five years old, your students’ Reflections art work and scholarship/grant applications will not be considered.

The date is figured from the state parliamentarian’s signature on the last page of the bylaws. The target date is 2018 or later. If you need assistance updating bylaws, be in touch with your council leadership if in council, or, if out of council, with district leadership at the email address below.

Questions? Contact Sue King at parliamentarian@ninthdistrictpta.org

Auditor Additions

New Fillable Audit Forms

Using the most recent version of forms is always a good idea, and in the world of audits, there's exciting news on that front – the Audit Report and the Audit Checklist are now available as fillable pdfs! That allows auditors to just ‘fill in the blanks’ on those forms instead of handwriting the information or tedious work to electronically complete the forms. The latest forms are available from the Ninth District PTA website on our forms page or the California State PTA website here. Both sources have a selection of other useful forms in addition to these.

Questions? Contact your Council Auditor or Michael King, Ninth District PTA auditor

Family Engagement

PTA updates standards for Family-School Partnerships

The PTA National Standards for Family School Partnerships has transformed family engagement across the country for over 20 years. The Standards set the bar for best practices in six key tenets. The NEW 2022 version includes the same six key Standards with impactful edits to goals and indicators.

Grant Opportunity

Apply for a School Garden Grant

Every year Berry Good Food awards grants to K-12 schools and community educational organizations with garden projects that support healthy food education in San Diego County. Applications due October 31, 2022.

Legislation

Social Media and Elections

PTAs cannot support or oppose political parties or candidates, including those running for school board. That means PTAs must monitor their social media - including the comments - so it doesn't appear you are endorsing or opposing a candidate. Endorsements can be implied so be careful. Good rule of thumb is not to allow any comments on a candidate running for office on your PTA social media.

Health

October Health Awareness Month Themes

During October, we observe National Depression Education & Awareness Month. This important holiday helps teach us about the signs, symptoms, and treatment options for depression. It also lets all of us know that seeking help — either from a counselor, a trusted friend, or your community — is a sign of hope and strength.

October is also National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, taking the lives of more than 356,000 people each year, including more than 23,000 youth under age 18.
