President's Message

Dear PTA Leaders and Members,

We're now a couple of months into this term for new PTA leaders. I hope everyone is settling into their positions well. The school year start is exciting as a PTA leader. I was both happy and sad for my children to start their last year of high school and middle school. I marvel at the enthusiasm, drive and passion my fellow PTA volunteers have. You're all amazing!

As you move along into your year, don’t forget that plans change and that's OK. Don’t be afraid to scrap Plan A and find a Plan B if something isn’t going to work out. Just because it’s “always been done that way” doesn’t mean it has to continue that way. Change is OK!

Watch for upcoming training opportunities, both online and in person. We hope to see many of you there.

I look forward to the great things our PTAs are doing around Ninth District and visiting as many of your events as I can.

Running Your PTA

Leadership

The PTA Transition Period

One measure of good leadership is how well others have been prepared to continue the work of PTA. A sign of a good leader is not what you have done in your year but what is accomplished the year after. If you are a past officer, here are some great tips on how to step back with grace.

Legislation

California State PTA urges a yes vote on Proposition 28 art and music funding

Proposition 28 would require the state to provide funding to increase arts instruction and programs in schools without raising taxes. The majority of the funding is to be used to hire new staff (80 percent) and for arts education programs. The initiative would also require schools to publish reports showing how the money was used to directly benefit students.

California State PTA urges a yes vote on Proposition 31 flavored tobacco products

SB 793, signed into law in 2020 and supported by California State PTA, banned the sale of flavored tobacco products in California. Opponents of the law put Proposition 31 on the November ballot to try to overturn the law. With flavors like “cotton candy,” “mango slushy,” and “chocolate,” vaping tobacco products have become increasingly popular among youth as young as 4th grade. To allow SB 793 to go into effect, vote yes on proposition 31.

Health

September is National Food Safety Education Month.

It’s a great time to focus on key illness prevention steps, such as avoiding cross-contamination in your kitchen. Always follow four simple steps to prevent food poisoning: Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill. Raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs can spread germs to ready-to-eat foods, like salads or food that is already cooked.
