Big-City School Superintendents Call for Congress to Provide More Education Funding
A letter was signed recently by 62 urban school superintendents asking Congress to approve new federal funding for school systems to offset the financial impact districts are incurring as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Districts Partner with Local TV Stations to Provide Educational Programming
Television time quickly evolved into learning time as districts and media groups across the nation formed partnerships to deliver daytime educational programming once schools shut down due to the coronavirus.

Urban Districts Gear Up for Virtual Summer School
The coronavirus forced urban school districts to shut their doors in March and keep them closed through the end of the academic year. In an effort to mitigate the learning loss students have experienced due to school closures, many districts are implementing summer programs for their students.

Educators Aim for Long-Term Solution to Internet Access
When the Cleveland Metropolitan School District was forced to close its schools because of the coronavirus, the district had to scramble to distribute 13,000 computer devices and nearly 9,000 hotspots to students who did not have access to computers or the internet.  

New Superintendents Named in Atlanta and Rochester
The Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education has hired Lisa Herring to a three-year contract as the district’s superintendent beginning July 1.


Former First Lady Laura Bush and Presidential Candidate Julian Castro to Speak at Fall Conference
Two Texans -- Laura Bush, former First Lady of the United States, and Julian Castro, secretary of housing and urban development in the Obama administration – will address urban educators at the Council of the Great City Schools’ 64th Fall Conference scheduled for Oct. 14-18 in Dallas.

Extraordinary Employees
Across the nation, urban school district employees have gone above and beyond the call of duty during the coronavirus pandemic, from passing out meals, to distributing laptops, to conducting lessons online and making house calls.
