OP Engine Symposium 2018
On November 7, 2018, we hosted the first ever Opposed-Piston Engine Symposium, held at the Hilton Resort in San Diego. The program featured presentations and discussion on the thermodynamic advantages, emissions and aftertreatment, mechanical design, and gasoline compression ignition of the Opposed-Piston Engine from Achates Power.

Speakers included technical experts and industry leaders in the Powertrain community.

Ultra-low NOx Heavy-Duty Truck Demonstration
On November 8, Achates Power, CALSTART and CARB, along with key partners, gave an update on the Heavy-Duty Opposed-Piston Engine program and its potential impact on reducing emissions of the heavy-duty fleet market in a demonstration program. The event was also to commemorate the Heavy-Duty Opposed-Piston (OP) Engine project achieving the Ultra-Low NOx standard of 0.02 g/bhp-hr in engine simulations and now production of the engines for the first demonstration vehicles beginning.

Validating that the high-efficiency Achates Power OP engine could also achieve emission levels 90% below federal NOx standards is an important milestone in this ground-breaking demonstration project funded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and several air districts and managed by CALSTART. Program progress was reported to key stakeholders and the media at an event in San Diego.

Opposed-piston diesels enter limited production
A pair of heavy-duty opposed-piston engines will be produced for an emissions-reduction project in California, officials with the program announced Nov. 8 at a press event in San Diego.

Achates says its new engine offers ultra-low NOx emissions
Laboratory testing shows that the privately held, San Diego-based company’s unusual  opposed piston engine  – scaled up to deliver 450 horsepower and 1,750 pound-feet of torque – produces 90 percent fewer NOx emissions than the current federal standard for diesels.

Eaton supplying TVS air pump to manage airflow in Achates opposed-piston engine
Power management company Eaton announces it will supply its TVS air pump to manage airflow in the demonstration of the Achates Power two-stroke Opposed-Piston Engine (OP Engine) at the Internal Combustion Engine Fall Technical Conference in San Diego.

Achates Power, the revolutionary super clean diesel engine
At the moment, the ACE of Achates Power is still under development and tests, even on the road, will continue until 2020, but CEO David Johnson said that the first engines will be commercialized in 2023.

2018 Ford F-150 Power Stroke Diesel Deceptively Quiet
Its 3.0-liter V-6 Power Stroke diesel engine boasts 250 horsepower and 440 lb.-ft. of torque, 11,400 pounds of towing capacity, and 2,020 pounds of payload capacity. While Ford only expects diesel sales to make up 5% of overall F-150 sales, they gave diesel shoppers several options.

Diesel remains important, Alphabet says
Modern diesel engines remain an important part of the right fuel mix for fleets, according to leasing company Alphabet. The firm cites research from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, which found that 270 diesel cars over the past year not only passed the new WLTP emissions test, but also the Real Driving Emissions test that will be compulsory from September 2019.

Diesel is not dead, says panel
‘Diesel is not dead,’ is the agreement of our panel of experts in the remarketing business. Diesel still represents a significant part of the current fleet in Europe, and even 40% of the new registered vehicles still are driving on diesel.

Oil market roiled by too much gasoline, not enough diesel
Global oil markets are increasingly over-supplied with light distillates, such as gasoline, while there are not enough middle distillates, such as diesel, which has opened a big price differential between the two fuels.

FTR ups class 8 truck and trailer forecasts for 2019
Research firm FTR has raised its 2019 forecast for North American Class 8 truck factory shipments to 350,000 units, for a year-over-year increase of 8%. It has also increased its forecast for U.S. commercial trailer production (not including medium-duty low beds) to 310,000 units, which is just under this year’s expected volume.

October Class 8 sales soar to highest mark since June 2015
Class 8 sales in October reached the highest point in more than three years as a smoother supply chain and the bullish economy lifted the total to 25,007, WardsAuto.com reported.
