“Comfort ye, comfort ye my people said, the Lord”
Isaiah 40:1
Today is the 15th day of the New Year!
In the month of January, there are significant activities to celebrate and remember those who have out-run us to our heavenly home.
In a few days, we will celebrate the peaceful transfer of power from one U.S. President to another, the observance of the national holiday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the NCAA Football Championship between Notre Dame and Ohio State, and continued support for our brothers and sisters on the West Coast.
On a personal note, tomorrow is the first anniversary of our son, Kevin Jr’s. passing and we’re reflecting on his life and legacy. Especially, the birth of his son, Kruze Kevin James, celebrating his eight-month birthday with his mother, Alexis in Norfolk, Virginia. During my personal devotional reading, I reflected upon two fathers who experienced the death of their sons (God & Rabbi Harold Kushner).
The author of 14 books, Rabbi Harold Kushner is perhaps best known for his title,
When Bad Things Happen to Good People, which he wrote after his first-born son Aaron died of a rare aging disease. Unfortunately, Rabbi Kushner gave the wrong answer. In fact, the question itself is a bit misleading. It implies that good people, whoever they are, are exempt from experiencing bad things. That’s not true. Job 14:1 says, “Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble.” Bad things do not happen to good people. They happen to all people. God only had one child who lived in this world without sin – Jesus. God has no children who live in this world without suffering – including Jesus!
Yet, God raised Jesus from the dead for our comfort and redemption. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
May the peace of God keep you!
Dr. Kevin M. James, Sr.
