“I’ve Got a Secret”
Luke 9:1-9
Who remembers the old TV show “I’ve Got a Secret” that aired on CBS from 1952 to 1962. The show featured celebrities guessing a contestant’s secret. These celebrities would try to guess the contestants' secret by asking questions. Does it have something to do about your work, hobby or something you did in your life. At the end of the show, if the celebrities couldn’t guess, the contestant won a prize.
This came to my mind when we read about the Transfiguration of Jesus. Here, Jesus took Peter, James and John up to the mountain top. Just the four of them. Then, Jesus started to change. His face shone with glory. His clothes became brighter than bright. Brighter than you can ever imagine-blinding.
Then two more people appeared out of nowhere. It was Elijah and Moses and they were having a discussion with Jesus.
Then, Peter, who never minced words stated how good this is that they should build three shelters. One for each: Moses, Elijah and Jesus. By the time the words came out of his mouth, a great cloud engulfed them blotting out the sun. Then a voice from within the cloud said “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him."
Then suddenly everything disappeared. It was just the four of them again. As they were coming down the mountain Jesus told them not to say anything about this until he has risen from the dead. They were complexed and wondering about the statement about not to say anything about what they saw until he rose from the dead.
Could you imagine keeping that kind of secret. Seeing and hearing so many miraculous things I would be busting at the gut. Just to say here is the Messiah.
The question is, how many of us could keep this secret and yet we try to today by keeping our faith a secret. Let us open up with bright glowing faces of being a Christian. Being saved by the Blood of Jesus. Go out and spread the word. Especially this time of year.
God bless you,
Rev. Bill Sparks
