"If one follows Jesus, happy to be attracted by Him, others will take notice. They may even be astonished. The joy that radiates from those attracted by Christ and by his Spirit is what can make any missionary initiative fruitful."
-Pope Francis

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Diocesan Council of Austin, in partnership with the City of Austin and the Diocese of Austin, received 10,000 face masks from the Austin Emergency Supply Foundation to be distributed to construction workers, their families, and our neighbors in need. Kanobia Russell-Blackmon, Director of Development and Marketing, and Father James Misko, Vicar General of the Diocese of Austin, participated in a Monday press conference at the Consulate General of Mexico where the masks were distributed to the Society as well as several other agencies. This is part of a continued effort to protect communities from COVID-19. "The Society is grateful to Mayor Adler, for inviting the Diocese of Austin to partner in this initiative. We are incredibly grateful that Bishop Vásquez has entrusted us with the distribution of these masks,” said Russell-Blackmon.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, construction workers account for more than 70,000 jobs in the Austin metropolitan area and a significant portion of the construction workforce comes from the Hispanic Community. Austin Emergency Supply Foundation donated the masks to raise awareness about the importance of wearing masks for essential workers, construction workers and their families.
Face masks will be distributed at the Vincentian Family Center Tuesday – Friday from 9:00am – 12:00pm. Outside those hours, please call 512-251-6995.

The Ascension of the Lord

Gospel: (Matthew 28: 16-20)
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. Then they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “
All power in heaven and earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of time.”
Vincentian Reflection:
Jesus knew that his mission was not to be continued by mere humans; on our own authority and power we could not give true witness and our doubts and misunderstandings could never be overcome. Jesus knew that his mission could be entrusted to his disciples because they “will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon” them. It is the Spirit who resolves doubt, clears up misunderstanding about the mission, gives wisdom, revelation, and knowledge. Thus, being disciples of Jesus is not something we are alone. We are disciples by letting the Spirit work through us as we live our everyday life.
(Living Liturgy, p.142)
Recall a time when you felt the presence of the Spirit in your life making you an instrument of God.
