Our staff works diligently to build a safe, respectful environment for all who enter our school. Aspen View Academy students know our culture by heart though they may not be able to talk about it objectively. Being immersed daily in classroom routines, building relationships with teachers and classmates through agreed upon parameters posted and referred to again and again, working through conflict that is bound to occur on occasion, and navigating from homeroom to math to art to cafeteria to playground, these are the means through which our children absorb AVA culture.

As James K. A. Smith writes, “Map knowledge is the knowledge of a spectator, not an inhabitant; it is how an outsider sees the village, not a native.” Our students are AVA natives. They may not be able to find room 223, but they know where Mrs. Doyle’s room is (insert another room number and teacher in their grade level or just above or below theirs). They know their favorite game to play at recess, the place where angry words were spoken between friends, and where an adult helped them work through the injustice toward reconciliation. They know what they felt when the chicks hatched or as they participated in a civil war battle reenactment or when long division suddenly became clear. They are learning our culture by heart.

In tours and parent/teacher conferences, parents can gain map knowledge. In volunteer hours, in the classroom, on the playground, at carpool, parents can experience a little of native living. In dinner conversations and specific questions at pick-up time (we all know the disappointment of the intel generated by generic questions like “How was your day?” or “What did you learn?”;0), we can get glimpses of what our children are experiencing and how they are processing it all.

AVA is a community. We’d love everyone to experience it as an inhabitant. It will take time and effort, but we believe it is worth both. And, we believe your child can offer you glimpses of their own experience any time. Our hope is that AVA’s culture is aiding their character formation right alongside your own family’s culture.

Eighth Grade News
8th Grade Parents,

We received a great response to the survey about parents having the option to purchase a memento for their 8th grade student. Below are the details of how to order and when to pick up.

If you would like to provide your 8th Grader a memento of their time at Aspen View Academy you may purchase an engraved 4 x 6 picture frame from this link for $10.  You will have until April 30th to purchase this memento. They will be available the last week of school to pick up, or you may pick it up just before the celebration on May 22nd. We will send an email to those families who have purchased once this item has arrived.

2019 Field Day

When?
  • PreK-2nd Grade-Wednesday, May 22nd 8:45am-11:20am
  • 3rd-5th Grade-Tuesday, May 21st 9:00am-2:05pm

We would like all students to bring a sack lunch. The lunch schedules will not match up with their break times during Field Day, so this is the best option. We will have middle school students helping with stations but can always use parent volunteers to help. We will have a concession stand/break station again this year. Students will be allowed to buy candy and drinks with money they bring from home. The candy sale is a great fundraiser which has helped to purchase new equipment for PE. A list of the items that we will be selling will be sent home with students before Field Day. Please talk to your students about what they can buy with the amount of money they have. Students do not need to wear their uniforms on the day they have Field Day. They can wear items from the Wolf Shack, past field day shirts, or appropriate athletic clothes (shorts must be fingertip length). We encourage students to bring sunscreen, a hat, a water bottle to carry from station to station, and athletic shoes.

For questions, please email Ms. Damm or Mrs. Alguire.
Lost and Found

Please stop by to check the lost and found. ALL items left after the last day of school will be donated.
Parents, please be sure your contact information and emergency contacts are up to date. You can do this by logging in to your parent portal, choosing your student, and clicking on demographics.
TOMORROW, April 26th is our spring picture day. This is a dress of choice day as well. Only students who bring the order form to school will be photographed. Please be sure to tell your student(s) to be sure to give their order form to their teacher. Order forms went home last week, or you can click here for the electronic version (we will not be doing group photos for spring, so if you order a group photo it will be the photo taken in the fall).
PreK and Kindergarten Students

Tomorrow is spring/cap and gown picture day. The photographer will be offering both spring pictures and/or cap and gown pictures for your PreK/Kindergarten student. Students will only be photographed if they bring the order form. If you choose to have them photographed, you may choose to order graduation photos and/or spring photos. Order forms went home last week, or you can click below for the electronic version. Please be sure your little ones know to turn the form(s) in to their teachers. We will not be doing group photos for spring, so if you order a group photo it will be the photo taken from the fall.
