A Message From the Principal
The safety of your children will always remain my number 1 priority. Clearly, the two events that occurred in the past week truly support that need for safety. The situation that began Tuesday and lasted into Wednesday was unprecedented. Never have I seen an incident that caused so many school districts to close. I also realize that when the school initiates various security measures (lockout) that it may cause frustration for students and parents. This is especially so when it occurs so close to the end of the day like both of our incidents did. That timing makes it difficult to get a timely communication out to the parents as quickly as I would like. I, like my entire staff, are very preoccupied making sure our students, staff, and parents are safe. Once the incident is over, I try to send a communication and share what I can. I do this to keep you informed and to also control the rumor mill. So many times, the information that students share is far from what happened.

Thank you for your patience and understanding when situations like these arise. I know it is frustrating to have to wait in line and show an ID in order to get your child. This is done solely for the safety of everyone. I would prefer to explain that we are causing a frustration by making you wait a little longer because we are keeping your child safe rather than explain a frustration because we did not initiate our safety protocols with fidelity and a child was hurt. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please know that the safety of your children will never be compromised. I have mentioned before, when it comes to student safety, I treat your child like they are my own and do whatever it takes to keep them safe.

Finally, I cannot thank our staff enough for how they responded with both of these emergencies. Their dedication and commitment to your children is second to none!

Character Counts at Aspen View.

This school is more than a place to master academic content; it is a place to grow into a well-rounded and thoughtful young adults.

This focus on character development is evident in standing AVA traditions such as the morning recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and Student Creed, the recognition given to "Character Award" recipients each trimester, and the distribution of "Wolf Bucks" when students are observed while demonstrating excellence, to name a few.

To build on this foundation AVA middle school has launched an additional three-pronged approach.

There is now a daily character reflection built into every 1st period class. During the additional 15 minutes at the start of homeroom students are guided to reflect on one of our school's core values (R.E.S.P.E.C.T.). This reflection takes the form of a brief daily class discussion in which they review an inspirational quote, share affirmations with classmates, or brainstorm ways to put character into action.

There is also a weekly focus on one of our core values (which will grow into a monthly focus starting next year). The goal is to spend a sustained period of time discussing and thinking about each of our school values so that we can deeply dive into what they mean and how they improve our lives.

Finally, we are hosting large group meetings once a trimester where students participate in an open, guided discussions about the negatives and positives we see in our school culture, where we can grow, and what each of them can do to make sure that everyone in the building is having the best experience possible. In the future these meetings will provide the opportunity to discuss a range of character topics and student needs.

This on-going effort was introduced at the start of the current trimester and will continue as a tradition into the beginning of next year. AVA believes in the value of R.E.S.P.E.C.T. and strives to support the character education of our students as an investment in our school community and our students' future.
