Today, as I pen my final newsletter article, I find myself reflecting over my years at Aspen View Academy. My husband and I will be moving to South Carolina in June. The transition is bittersweet.

I am deeply grateful for the generous career opportunities and responsibilities I have been blessed to participate in over these past six years. Education is a noble and beautiful task. As Andrew Tobolowsky writes: “What [students] are doing – whatever the name on the schedule says – is learning how to use our tools, such as they are, so that we can use them on anything. And ‘anything’ is precisely what we are preparing [students] for, no matter the title of the class. Whatever our students do, and wherever they go from here, they will live in a world of narratives, and that certainly includes job ads in addition to commercials, movies, political speeches,…columns, and even tweets.” He continues, “we teach students how to see the world around them with new eyes, and to become part of it in a different way. We teach them to read, not just texts, but discourse and ideology. What happens in the classroom is a mirror held up to show them themselves, what lies beyond, what might happen next, and how to meet it.”

This is the noble and beautiful task that we, parents and staff, have joined hands to complete. It is the task to which we woo children daily. The world that they inhabit is not static. Children need a firm foundation of family, culture, community, history, and literature to enable them to see, synthesize, and analyze all that they experience. AVA is continually honing the educational and relational components of student experience. We are not just teachers after all; we are learners.

Thank you for entrusting your children to us and for partnering with us. I have been changed by my work here. Thank you for being part of my sharpening.

Do not grow weary in doing good~

We are offering tutoring at AVA over the summer for your student!

How it works:

Parents and teachers schedule tutoring sessions directly with one another by email, and parents pay the teacher directly.

  • $50 per student for 60 minutes
  • $25 per student for 60 minutes for groups of 3 or more

AVA PTO Golf Tournament

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s tournament, dinner, and auction. A GIANT thank you to our AVA families that sponsored this event. Realty One Group, Lokal Homes, Aspen Creek Dental, CB Ink Screen Printing, Outdoor Innovations, Meadows Orthodontics, and Center for Plastic Surgery at Castle Rock. We also want to thank our other sponsers: 1st Bank, IREA, TRANE, Car Was USA Express, Assured Partners, Haselden Construction, Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie, and Meadows Family Dentistry. The great news is that we were able to raise $22,000, just over half way to our goal of $40,000 for the library upgrade. The year is not over yet, and the ability to donate directly is still available. Please donate directly here, and push us over the goal!
AVA Used Uniform End of Year Sale 2019

Ready to sell uniforms that no longer fit? Want to buy uniforms for next school year and pay less? Need volunteer hours to close out the year? This sale would not be possible without our sale families and volunteers, so please sign up and join us for the END OF YEAR sale on:

Saturday, May 18 from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM in the AVA Cafeteria.

Click here for more information and/or to sign up to volunteer.

AVA BASE (Before and After School Enrichment) for the Fall is now open. Click here to register.
2019 Field Day

When?
  • PreK-2nd Grade-Wednesday, May 22nd 8:45am-11:20am
  • 3rd-5th Grade-Tuesday, May 21st 9:00am-2:05pm

We would like all students to bring a sack lunch. The lunch schedules will not match up with their break times during Field Day, so this is the best option. We will have middle school students helping with stations but can always use parent volunteers to help and/or to donate items (please click here). We will have a concession stand/break station again this year. Students will be allowed to buy candy and drinks with money they bring from home. The candy sale is a great fundraiser which has helped to purchase new equipment for PE. A list of the items that we will be selling will be sent home with students before Field Day. Please talk to your students about what they can buy with the amount of money they have. Students do not need to wear their uniforms on the day they have Field Day. They can wear items from the Wolf Shack, past field day shirts, or appropriate athletic clothes (shorts must be fingertip length). We encourage students to bring sunscreen, a hat, a water bottle to carry from station to station, and athletic shoes.

For questions, please email Ms. Damm or Mrs. Alguire.
