“He who works with his hands is a laborer.

He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.

He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.”

– St. Francis of Assisi

Can you remember when your baby discovered his hands? When she first deliberately reached for the rattle? What about his first crayon drawing or finger painting? Does she love sculpting with playdough or building with Legos? Such handiwork is the work of childhood.

I remember clearly watching each of my three sons as they wrote early paragraphs. The concentration was physical. His whole body was involved in his creation. The leaning in was literal. And in fact, what he produced was art.

Parents and teachers coach children’s hands daily. In the classroom, it often follows the pattern of I do, we do, you do. The teacher models the concept; then the class tries the exercise together as a group; and, finally, students give it a whirl individually. The teacher hovers as the students lean into the assignment. Like any good coach, she is never far away, encouraging, reminding, correcting because this is the moment of learning. Understanding becomes application. In the you do, a-ha moments happen. In the you do, children become competent. And, if the adults are careful and self-controlled, children become artists.

Happy hovering,

Melissa Clemmons
Dean of Learning
