December 1 & 2 Come and join the Boise High School Choir students for the 45th Annual Madrigal Dinner. It is an evening of wonderful food and beautiful music. Travel back in time with us to the Renaissance and the Royal Court in Iron Fist Castle. Shows are December 1st and 2nd in the Fellowship Hall at the Cathedral of the Rockies. Seating begins at 6:00 p.m. and the show starts promptly at 6:30 p.m.. Pre-purchasing tickets is highly encouraged as this popular annual event nearly always sells out. December 1 - 20: Winter is coming and many local children in low-income households do not have proper footwear to keep their toes warm. Ada County Sheriff's Office, Boise Police Department and United Way of Treasure Valley have teamed-up to collect new and gently used children's shoes this holiday season (sizes 1-7). December 11: Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children will sponsor a workshop for parents to help prepare their child for success in kindergarten. January 7: Online registration begins for Winter 2018 Community Education classes at www.boiselearns.org.  Choose from hundreds of personal enrichment classes for all ages! Expand your mind by learning something new in 2018 by enrolling in a Community Education class. From arts and crafts, computers and culinary arts, fitness & health, to garden, green living & the great outdoors, we have a class for everyone! Winter Community Education session runs January 22nd through March 15th. January 9 - 23: Informational Math Nights for 5th and 6th grade parents. These sessions will help parents make informed decisions about what option is best for their student when it comes to placement in math courses. There will be a discussion of the recommended student placement in Math 6, Honor 6/7, and Compacted 7/8, as well as an explanation about the secondary math course sequence. January 31: All Boise District Junior and Senior High students and parents are invited to Borah High School for our first ever Health Professions Expo! College & program representatives will provide hands-on student experiences & answer questions about specific fields. Learn about entrance into medical school, gain information & advice from practicing doctors, nurses, dentists & health profession specialists. Explore District courses, programs & certificates that lay the foundation for success in health-related fields. The first 50 students will receive earbuds and all students visiting booths and/or panel sessions will be entered into a drawing to win an i-Pad! Food, coffee and water will be provided. Many thanks to the generous support of St. Alphonsus and St. Luke's.

Student Artwork Selected for District Annual Holiday Card:  Adams Elementary School 5th grade student Mihaya Sakai's artwork was selected as the winner of this year's Boise School District Holiday Card Contest. Mihaya is a student in Ms. Reeves' 5th grade class. Her depiction of holiday ornaments (pictured) was selected from among two thousand (2,000) entries submitted by students in grades K-6. As the Grand Prize Winner, Mihaya will receive a certificate of participation, 50 cards featuring her artwork, and a $25 gift card to Quality Art. Mihaya will be recognized during the December 11th Boise School Board meeting.

Student Holiday Artwork Selected: The Saint Alphonsus Festival of Trees Choice Art Contest Recipient is Hailey Taylor, 5th Grade, Cynthia Mann Elementary School. Hailey's teacher is Ms. Hennessy.  Hailey's artwork (pictured) was chosen from among two thousand (2,000) entries submited by students representing every elementary school in the Boise School District.

Timberline Student Selected to Perform at Carnegie Hall: Minjun Kwak (pictured), Timberline High Sophomore alto saxophone player, auditioned for and was selected to perform in the International Honor Performance Series Concert Band at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Minjun was selected from thousands of applicants to represent Idaho and Timberline at one of the most famous premier performance venues in the world. Minjun will perform with other selected students from all across the world in February.

Timberline Students Receive State Recognition: Nearly 30 students from Timberline High and Timberline's feeder schools have been selected to perform in the Idaho All-State Band and Orchestra. The Timberline High quadrant has the highest representation in the District and the highest band and orchestra representation in the state on this year's All-State Band and Orchestra.  Review a list of students chosen for this honor.

Boise High Student Honored: Boise High Junior Anne Nygard (pictured) was recently awarded Outstanding Youth Philanthropist by the Idaho Nonprofit Center for her nonprofit and volunteer work that provides running shoes to refugees. She was given the award at a banquet held on November 15th celebrating Idaho Philanthropy Day.

District Educator Receives State Recognition: Peggy Sawyer (pictured), District Speech Language Pathologist, recently received the "Honors of the Association" Award from the Idaho Speech, Language & Hearing Association at their annual convention in October. This is the highest honor the association bestows to a member for their service to education.

Breakfast With Dad Event Highlights Importance of Postive Adult Role Model: On Friday, November 17, 2017, Boise School District's Whitney Elementary School held a Breakfast with Dad event (see adjacent video) to celebrate and recognize the importance of having a responsible adult serve as a positive role model for our students. Students, whose parents were unable to attend, were accompanied by representatives from Boise State University's football team, Boise School District's Administration, Boise City Parks and Recreation Department and many other dedicated community volunteers and parents/guardians. Boise School District and Whitney Elementary School would like to thank the many individuals who were responsible for coordinating this worthwhile and inspirational event.

Youth-Lead Sticker Shock Alcohol Prevention Initiative Underway : On Thursday, November 16, 2017 students enrolled in Frank Church High School's AVID class participated in a community service project to place stickers on bags to be used by liquor stores in the Boise area warning adults that providing alcohol to minors is illegal and comes with a fine up to $1,000 and up to one (1) year in jail. Students - Looking For Something To Do On The Weekends? Open Gym program runs on Saturday and Sunday at a number of Boise School District schools. Open Gym is presented by the Boise Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with the Boise School District. Participating schools include Garfield and Hawthorne elementary schools (K-6 children only) each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Les Bois, East, South & West junior high schools (7-12 students only) at various times on Saturday and Sunday.  Review the program flyer for specific times and information.

Active Engagement and Civility Help Define Our Community & Our Schools: In October, the Boise School Board of Trustees unanimously approved the 2018- 19 school year calendar. Recently, the Board and administration completed its review of the process used to develop the calendar and identified steps for moving forward. Read more...
