Remember to Save the Date for our Holy Synod
Our Synod Theme: The Church in Action
We have been sent for a reason. Francis of Assisi puts the emphasis on actions: “Preach the Gospel at all times; and if necessary, use words.” Theresa of Avila, we are told, says that after reaching the final stage of holiness there is only one question that remains, “How can I be helpful?” Pope Francis gave us a new image of the Church: a field hospital, that is, so many in the world are suffering; the church’s role is to attend to that suffering, as Jesus did.
Of course there are always opportunities to verbally witness to our experience of, and relationship with, God. Something like the RCIA is necessary for the growth of disciples. But all of this, which is essential, within the Church, is aimed at getting workers out to “the field hospital,” in the unwalled part of the Church. We don’t hide our story of being “in Christ” in the world, but we don’t focus on that story either while we are changing dressings in the hospital; we focus on serving “in Christ” and attending to suffering as he did and as he does through us.
This emphasis has a great advantage in our time. One, the world needs loving and just people who care about those in need. Two, the world recognizes this kind of goodness and resonates with it, even when it might not resonate with everything that comes out of our mouths. Three, other great faith traditions end up at the same place Teresa did, namely, attending to the needs of others; that means there are opportunities galore to collaborate with many other religious and non-religious people in doing this work of, as the Jewish tradition would say, tikkun olam, mending the world. There is a freedom when we allow our internal stories about Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, to motivate us and then go out into the world and lock arms with the many people who are motivated to alleviate the suffering of the world.
This is what “Church in Action” looks like. Look only to the history of religious women in this country who got off the boats from Europe and started taking care of the sick and the uneducated and the orphaned, etc. Now they are focusing on human trafficking and neighborhoods getting sick from ground water contamination. They are humble sacraments of the compassion and justice of God. May they be our heroes as we walk into our future.
Preparing for Synod
May I ask you to consider two ways to prepare for the synod. Think about sending at least one or two younger persons from your community, and as delegates if you have not already chosen yours. This is one way we assure our future. Also, again if you have not already done so, plan to put some money aside now to help your delegates come to the synod to represent you. We pay for the synodal experience because we believe in a Church where everyone’s voice is represented.
Opportunities to Help Efforts in Ukraine:
Bishop-elect Tomasz Puchalski is a beautiful, spirit-filled Polish priest we’ve known for a decade or more. His church communities in Poland are helping refugees, working very closely with a group of Dominican Sisters who are directly ministering to the refugees who cross into Poland from Ukraine.
If you wish to donate to this organization:
Consecration of Tomasz Puchalski in Poland
Tomasz’ consecration in Poznan, Poland is planned for June 18th. We are planning cautiously for this event while we keep our eye on the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. If there is reason to believe we will not be safe as we get closer to the event, we will of course consider making alternative arrangements. In the meantime, I am thrilled for our sister church in Poland and look forward very much to being with many old friends and having the joy of praying with them at the beginning of Tomasz’ episcopal ministry.
Current Foci of the Council of Bishops in Response to Recent Events
1. Guidelines on email and internet postings
2. Guidelines for large Zoom sessions
3. Procedures for handling a complaint about the constitutionality of a decision within the ECC.
4. An “ECC Commission on Education,” especially the education of clergy.
Thanks to each of you who have been working hard at perfecting our Communion.
Your brother,
+Francis

Rosa Buffone, President House of Pastors
Greetings Communion!
My heart is filled with gratitude for the good works happening in our House of Pastors. The HOP Steering Committee continues to meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month to discuss ways of improving communication, deepening relationships and sharing resources and lived experiences among HOP delegates and those we serve. Listed below is a sampling of our achievements!
The monthly HOP Newsletter is emailed to delegates and clergy on the first of each month. If you are a delegate or clergy and do not receive it, please contact me and I will add your email address to the distribution list!
Our HOP clergy ordination formation, clergy continuing education, liturgical resources and bylaws working groups are working diligently and providing great opportunities to connect with one another. Listed below are the recordings of the presentations provided through the Liturgical Resources working team. Enjoy!

The HOP By Laws working group has been reviewing the 2010 document and soon will have a draft for the House for input. The document will fast forward us to 2022 and help us work together towards a vibrant House of Pastors for the future.
The Clergy Ordination Formation and Clergy Continuing Education working groups are exploring ECC ordination requirements, M.Div. equivalency, alternative models to ordained ministry, continued learning once ordained, and qualifications for clergy in good standing. It’s wonderful to be working in collaboration with Bishop Francis’ team (which includes members of the HOL) to propose creative and exciting ways to educate seminarians and assure that our pastoral leaders & administrators continue in their efforts towards personal and theological growth in ways that will enhance community life.
Deacons, Chaplains, members of our ECC religious orders and the ordination candidates from our sister communities in Poland are connecting, sharing and supporting each other in ways that are unique to their ministry and formation.
We celebrate and delight in the many new ordained and lay leaders of our communities! To that end, we are compiling delegate and clergy directories.
Last, and certainly not least, through our Tender Tending ministry we pray for one another and reach out with cards and thought-filled tokens in times of celebration, difficulties and sorrow. I invite each of you in our beloved Communion to keep us prayer as well.
I pray the season of Lent is a time of deep reflection and renewal for your community. May the light of Christ shine brightly upon our path and the wisdom of Sophia touch our lips with truth, and the love and presence of God be appreciated in all creation and in every circumstance. May our Lenten journey prepare us for a deeper, broader and more radical experience of resurrection of the I AM God Presence when we joyfully sing Alleluia on Easter Sunday.
Abundant blessings,
Rev. Rosa Buffone

The First Young Women's Getaway
by Lourdes Talamantes
After encountering barriers of several natures, we finally held our first Young Women's Getaway, March 4-6th in beautiful Lake Arrowhead. 14 young ladies signed up, but that darn COVID, severe colds, and work kept 5 girls out at the last minute. This didn't stop the Team of 6 strong and amazing leaders, 2 awesome cooks, and 2 moms who got stranded due to the snow storm (LOL!) from pulling off the first of many Getaways/Retreats to come. Our cabin held a total of 19 women, with only 3 bathrooms!!!!! (God has a sense of humor).
Our Program was packed with activities for each minute, but God has His plan. When we said "Come as You Are," it really meant that we, too, had to meet them where they were. All the girls yearned for healing. They desired a safe place to talk about hurts and struggles and were looking for new friendships and an opportunity to begin discovering their purpose. The Getaway was designed to begin work on all those areas. They did say they needed more time to explore those areas in depth.
The Team left having learned from the girls more than what we expected. Our young people need to be heard and validated. They need to be loved by our actions and not our words. They have been through so much that they have pushed God away and/or looked for other ways to meet their faith need. The way to bring back their faith (or plant the seed) is THROUGH US and the work that we do (just like Mother Theresa). We become Jesus's partners, His hands that guide, the hand that touches a shoulder and the arms that hold them when they cry. We must be like Jesus and love & serve them as they are.
Here is a message from one of the moms:
"I wanted to thank you for letting my daughters join your retreat. I’ll never be able to repay you. Aniela was so happy and came back a different person. She has been struggling with so many emotional and mental setbacks. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’m getting emotional just thinking of your huge heart and willingness to let them participate. Thank you for your generosity.
Tatiana said she felt this peace and was so glad she went. She’s been dealing with a lot too, with a new job, but I’m sure she shared.
Please forgive me for not including a letter to you, as I did for the girls. You definitely deserved one, too. You are an inspiration to me and I’m so very grateful God put you in my life, He knew I needed you. "
We could not have done this without the generous financial support of the Mary Magdalene Society and for this gift, I am eternally grateful and overjoyed. Thank you, thank you!!!!!!
We are currently working on the Young Men's Retreat. This one will be run by our Guy's team on April 29-May 1st at Lazy W Ranch in San Juan Capistrano.
