Presidents Message

Dear MAAEYC Members and Friends,

As I share my final message as President of MAAEYC, I do so with deep pride in what we’ve built together—and with great optimism for what lies ahead. This has been a transformative year for our organization, and it has been my honor to help shape it alongside so many passionate and dedicated professionals.

This past year, we’ve seen growth, visibility, and impact unlike any in recent memory:

  • Membership and community presence increased across the state.
  • Engaged families and educators at public events like Playtopia.
  • Organized a successful toy drive for local children and families.
  • Expanded our partnership with the Life is Good Playmaker Project.
  • Hosted two record-breaking conferences with record attendance.
  • Held a comedy fundraiser, raising funds and spirits.
  • Honored leaders in our field, including Commissioner Amy Kershaw, Edna Cabral, and Meg Busby.
  • Participated in national advocacy, with representation at NAEYC Public Policy Forum.
  • Presented and engaged nationally at the NAEYC Annual Conference.
  • Celebrated statewide with the Governor’s proclamation of Week of the Young Child.

I am especially proud of how we’ve listened to our members. From conference content to community partnerships, we have centered your voices—responding with programs and events that reflect your real needs and aspirations as early childhood educators and advocates.

This work wasn’t mine alone—I thank the board members who brought their time, energy, and passion to the table, and who supported this growth by standing for unity and progress, even when the road was not always smooth. Your commitment and service have helped us achieve our goals and bring meaningful events and initiatives to our members and early childhood community.

As I transition into the role of Past President, I want to be share: I’m not going far. Leadership isn’t always about passing a torch—it’s about strengthening the flame together. I look forward to supporting Rachelle, our incoming President, and collaborating with our entire board to ensure that MAAEYC continues to grow.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead. Thank you for believing in the mission. And thank you for reminding me—every step of the way—why this work is worth it.

With gratitude, resilience, and continued commitment,

Dr. Cheryl Hovey, MAAEYC President

MAAEYC at the UMass Boston ECE Leadership Conference

This month, MAAEYC was honored to attend the UMass Boston Early Childhood Education Leadership Conference — a powerful gathering of educators, advocates, and leaders across the field. The day was filled with learning, connection, and inspiration.

We had the opportunity to hear from incredible speakers, including public policy advocates working tirelessly for equity and access in early education, and the renowned Dr. Howard Gardner, whose groundbreaking work on multiple intelligences continues to shape how we understand children’s learning and development.

Representing MAAEYC at the conference were President-Elect Rachelle Hannoush, Secretary Mellissa Oppedisano, and Board Member Greg Millien. It was a joy for our leadership team to connect with fellow early educators, both from family child care and center-based programs, and to engage in meaningful conversations about the future of our field.

Thank you to UMass Boston for hosting such a thoughtful and energizing event. MAAEYC remains deeply committed to amplifying educator voices, advocating for strong public policy, and supporting high-quality early education across the state.
