Welcome to the new School Year!

Dear PTAs of New Mexico,
Welcome to the new school year!
My name is Dawn Delfín and I am proud to serve you as the President of New Mexico Parent Teacher Association (NMPTA). All of NMPTA is here to support you as we continue to grow and change while coming out of the global pandemic. I give you a heartfelt THANK YOU for stepping up as a member of your local PTA and I am rooting for you in every way.
My passion is to live the principles of NMPTA’s mission statement:
The mission of New Mexico PTA is to make every child's potential a reality
by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
PTA is far more than a fundraising organization. Advocacy is the foundation of PTA and it’s our greatest strength in support of our children. NMPTA is 108 years strong and National PTA is 126 years old! Over the decades, we have accomplished so many great things for children as a result of advocacy. Your PTA can do more than just raise funds; you can raise awareness and amplify voices on behalf of our children. All of us at NMPTA are here to help you live these principles—and raise funds, too!
Please reach out to us any time at nmpta@newmexicopta.org or (505) 881-0712.
The entire NMPTA team wishes you all a successful school year and a thriving PTA. We are looking forward to working with each and every one of you.
With much appreciation for all you do,
Dawn Delfín
New Mexico PTA President, 2023-2025

Help Keep Kids Safe Online
Families need tools to help keep their kids safe online. Norton and National PTA are on a mission to bring digital education to thousands of families. The Smart Talk, our free, interactive resource helps families have open and positive conversations about social media, using apps, privacy, texting and more.

To spread awareness of the tool, we provide local PTAs with funding to host Smart Talk Conversations at their schools. In the 2022-2023 school year, 150 local PTAs from 32 different states received funding to implement the events at their schools. More than 11,000 people participated in these events and 97% of parents and caregivers reported that after attending they felt comfortable exploring digital safety with their child.

Help families at your school navigate the complex digital world by spreading the word about thesmarttalk.org. Each local PTA that hosts a Smart Talk Conversation at their school is also eligible to receive a $1,250 Smart Talk grant from Norton. 2023 Phoebe Apperson Hearst Award

PTAs and Schools Honored Nationally as Schools of Excellence
for Strong Family-School Partnerships

ALEXANDRIA, Va., (Aug. 1, 2023)—National PTA is pleased to honor 368 PTAs and schools from across the country and Department of Defense schools in Europe as 2022-2024 National PTA Schools of Excellence for building strong partnerships between families and their school that are enriching the educational experience and overall well-being for all students. National PTA is also pleased to recognize the following three top Schools of Excellence with its 2023 Phoebe Apperson Hearst Award—the highest honor presented by the association to celebrate effective family-school partnerships:

Phoebe Apperson Hearst Outstanding Family-School Partnership Award
Bells Ferry Elementary PTA (Marietta, Ga.)

Phoebe Apperson Hearst Family-School Partnership Award of Merit
Chaparral Elementary PTA (Albuquerque, N.M.)
Twin Echo Elementary PTA (Collinsville, Ill.)

National PTA is thrilled to honor Bells Ferry Elementary PTA, Chaparral Elementary PTA, Twin Echo Elementary PTA and all of the 2022-2024 School of Excellence designees,” said Yvonne Johnson, president of National PTA. “Their work to strengthen their family-school partnership has created an environment where families feel welcomed, included and empowered to support their child’s success and where students feel safe, supported and ready to learn, which is more important than ever.”

National PTA’s School of Excellence program supports a year-long commitment to strengthen family-school partnerships. Throughout the year, PTAs and schools collect feedback from their school communities to create and implement plans of action to improve family engagement and make a difference for every child. During the process, PTAs and families become key partners in decision-making and school improvement efforts. The program opens the lines of communication and critical thinking within school communities to make data-drive decisions that yield positive, long-term results.
There could not be a more urgent time to make sure schools and PTAs are reaching and engaging all families in ways that have a positive impact on all students’ success,” said Nathan R. Monell, CAE, National PTA executive director. “Our 2022-2024 National PTA School of Excellence designees and 2023 Phoebe Apperson Hearst Award honorees have demonstrated what over 40 years of research tells us—amazing things can be achieved when schools and families work together to accomplish a common goal.”

Enrollment is now open for the 2023-2024 School of Excellence program. The deadline to enroll is Oct. 15. For more information about the program and to enroll, visit PTA.org/Excellence.
