HARVARD STREET NEIGHBORHOOD HEALTH CENTER REFLECTIONS OF 2020 - AS WE EMBRACE 2021
Message from the President and CEO:

2020 has been a turbulent year to say the least, the unknown and unthinkable. Our nation and the world were invaded by a deadly virus that has infected millions and killed more than 300,000 people in the United States alone, and more than 12,000 in Massachusetts.

COVID-19 VACCINE HESITANCY

In communities of color, skepticism about the safety of the COVID-19 Vaccine continues. Read how Harvard Street’s CEO and Medical Director lead by example and discuss why it’s important for everyone to have an open mind!

44 YEARS OF DEDICATION: HSNHC HEAD OF PEDIATRICS RETIRES

For more than 44 years, Dr. Wha-Ja Woo-Fenton has been the face to thousands of pediatric patients at Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center. She has cared for and nurtured three and four generations of children born into families who today continue to bring their children for medical care.

HARVARD STREET CELEBRATES THE RETIREMENT OF TWO PEDIATRIC EMPLOYEES

In addition to celebrating the years of service by Dr. Woo, Harvard Street also celebrates and wishes well Nurse Renei Perez who is stepping down from her role after 38 years. A resident of Boston’s South End neighborhood, Renei has worked with Dr. Woo in Pediatrics for more than half of her time at the health center.

“Although we are sad to see them moving on, we are proud that these women loved and valued their work and patients at Harvard Street enough to remain for so many years. The Harvard Street Family wishes both Dr. Woo and Ms. Perez well,” said Harvard Street CEO Stan McLaren.
HSNHC’S: THE POWER OF HEALTH 2020 GALA!

We are very excited about hosting our first virtual gala entitled: The Power of Health. The event held on December 3, 2020 to-date has had more than 2,500 views since the night of Gala. Hosted by Television personality and motivational speaker Yadires Nova Salcedo, we honored three outstanding leaders who are making a difference in community health in unique ways.

HARVARD STREET CONTINUES TO ADDRESS FOOD INSECURITIES

Harvard Street believes in taking care of the whole person and family, which is why it has operated a Food Pantry at its 895 Blue Hill Avenue Building for the past 30 years. Each month hundreds of individuals and families are given bags of food to supplement their needs. However, since the COVID-19 Pandemic, more and more families have called our food service line requesting assistance or referred directly from our Nutritionist. Many people have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 and are experiencing severe food insecurities. Harvard Street purchases food from the Greater Boston Food Bank and partners with Morning Star Baptist Church on referrals and food short falls. In 2021, we will be expanding our efforts to further address food insecurities throughout the community.
NEW PARTNERSHIPS AND LOOKING AHEAD

Despite the turbulent year, Harvard Street is very excited about its expanded and new partnerships. These partnership include a strategic relationship with the City of Boston to expand COVID-19 Testing in various neighborhoods and housing developments throughout the city; our continued relationship with Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Faith Based Initiative to continue our COVID-19 Testing and health education; Children Services of Roxbury where we not only conduct COVID-19 Testing each Tuesday, but practice a patient referral program that benefits clients from their agency and our health center; Prince Hall Grand Lodge for Testing Thursdays.
