Trinity Sunday 2018
The Arkive: Ark and Dove's Newsletter

Come celebrate the unfathomable mystery of God’s being as Holy Trinity. Welcome this Trinity Sunday  with some very special music! At both the 9:30 and 11:00 worship services, Rebecca and Mark--along with special guests David Degge and Eric Echols--will come together one final time to bring you some of their favorite collaborative pieces from the past decade. You won't want to miss it!
Message from Pastor Jon
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove Church,

This Sunday, Pastor Tim will share a homily about caring for the earth, while the mystery of the Trinity is marked on the liturgical calendar. While "the Trinity" is not explicitly named in Scripture, the Bible does tell us how God encounters people as the God of creation, in Jesus Christ, and by the Spirit. When Jesus commissioned his disciples, he commanded them to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is quite fitting, then, that we are baptizing Paige Grace Loveless at 9:30 in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God and Mother of us all.

At both services, we will experience a pop-up collaboration of music led by Rebecca Bell Echols, Mark Edwards, David Degge and Eric Echols. These very talented musicians with many degrees to mount will play music spanning a decade of playing together. Many of you have seen these four collaborate on incredible pieces over the years. Their talent will surely lift our hearts in thanksgiving and praise to God. You won't want to miss this!

Many members of Ark and Dove have been listening very well to the concerns of our community this week as part of the listening campaign Pastor Tim discussed in last week's Arkive letter. I am happy to report that leaders in our congregation listened to over 100 people name what they want changed in Anne Arundel County in just this past week!! We still need you to voice your concerns so we, the 20 faith-based organizations now of Anne Arundel IAF, can act for change. Please come to a listening session on Saturday (tomorrow) at 10 am or after service this Sunday at 12:15 pm.

Verse and Prayer
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the earth is full of the glory of God. -Isaiah 6:3
Gracious Parent,
giver of all good things:
For our home on earth
and for your unfailing mercy,
we give you thanks.

Christ our Redeemer:
For your sacrifice on the cross
and rising from death that we might live,
we give you thanks and praise.

Holy Spirit, giver of life:
For your abiding presence in our lives
and for comforting and guiding us,
we give you thanks, praise, and glory.

O triune God:
To you be glory and praise
now and forever. Amen.

Financial Planning for the Ministry Year
Each year the session of Ark and Dove creates a financial plan for the ministry year. Before the session does this, it asks every household to fill out a pledge card.  A majority of our households pledge and even more give by EFT. So the session has some solid numbers, but they always have to make educated predictions about what the silent givers will give.

As of April 30, the session was expecting to receive about: $165,000
As of April 30, the church has received about:                    $155,000
There is concern about this shortfall in the amount of:      $ 10,000

Your giving is both needed and deeply appreciated,

Friendships Forged
Cheryl Schafer and Debbie Arey hosted a Burmese-American dinner on May 19th. The refugee resettlement team and our familis celebrated our friendship, while sharing cross-cultural food. Koko is an amazing cook. He made 3 dishes along with Jasmine rice. It was all delicious, and we appreciated him toning down the spices. Paul Doughty, Koko and Rose performed on guitar with many sing-along choices. We very much appreciated Cheryl Schafer hosting graciously at her home. As our 6 month contract ends, we plan on continuing our support and friendship with them. We would love to have more folks join us in this effort, which we have all come to enjoy immensely, especially if we decide to take on a new family in the future. Debbie Arey, 508-579-7748,

A Prayer for Memorial Day
Eternal God, from whom all life comes, to whom all life returns, we remember all who served our country in the military. We remember and we give thanks. We give thanks for sacrifices made and losses endured. We give thanks for acts of courage, grace and hope. We give thanks for our brothers and sisters who gave the full measure of devotion. We give thanks for those we knew well and those we never met. For the life, goodness, faith, courage, and love that was in each one, we give thanks. We pray for our brothers and sisters who are recovering from wounds in body, mind, spirit, or soul. Work healing in them in all the forms that healing takes. We pray for those who provide care to them. Show us ways that we can extend care and support. We pray for families and friends and all who grieve for loved ones who have died. Meet them in the valley of death's shadow. Embrace them in the healing warmth of your comfort, grace and love. Grant them and all of us the assurance that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whose name we pray. May the day soon come when swords are beaten into plowshares, war is studied no more, and all peoples and your world will know peace. May we work for that day. We pray through Jesus Christ. Amen.
