Hospitality - Our Shared Ministry

Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers - Romans 12:13

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Heb.13:2

Scripture exhorts us to show hospitality to all; to the saints (those within the Christian community), as well as to the strangers in our midst. Living a life of hospitality is not only beneficial for the Christian community but is a powerful witness to the world.

At St. Cuthbert’s we have a number of ministries that focus specifically on the practice of hospitably and welcoming. As we return this Fall after some time of rest and recreation I would encourage each of us to consider how we may practice our shared ministry of hospitality with intention.

A number of the ministries that fall under the umbrella of “Hospitality and Welcoming” are looking to increase the number of their members. Please consider how you may help.

Greeters: Can you arrive early to church to greet people at the doors and welcome parishioners as they arrive for worship? Please speak to Ned Smith (barbned4349@gmail.com).

Coffee Hour: Can you help serve coffee and tea after the service? Please speak to Shama Vimalendiran (778-885-4300).

Healthiest Babies: Can you help prepare food for the Healthiest Babies lunch? Please speak to Beth Fortin (604-572-8122).

Pastoral Care: Can you give someone a ride to church, or to an appointment? Can you provide a meal for someone in need? Can you visit someone in hospital or phone someone who is unable to attend church?  Please speak to George Goater (604-594-7088 or george.goater@gcardesign.com ).

Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. 1Pet.4:9-10

Thank you for considering how you may participate in this our collective and individual calling to a life of hospitality and welcoming.

Pastoral Musings

Corporate Singing In Church

We sing together in church services to worship God corporately, express faith and theology, foster unity and mutual encouragement among believers, strengthen emotional and spiritual connection with God, and teach and remember biblical truths. Singing together also provides a powerful way to express emotions when words fail and creates a unified voice to praise God. So, in a nutshell, in church, we sing:

To worship God

  • Singing is a direct expression of praise and adoration to God.
  • It is a way to focus on God and God’s nature, with collective voices giving glory to God.

To teach and remember theology

  • The lyrics of hymns and songs communicate Biblical doctrine, helping to instill faith and teach spiritual truths.
  • Singing acts as a powerful tool for memorization, helping people store God's word in their hearts and minds.

To unite and encourage believers

  • Singing together creates a sense of unity within the church body, uniting believers with one voice in praise.
  • Witnessing others express their faith through song can encourage and strengthen one's own faith, especially during difficult times.

For emotional and spiritual engagement

  • Music engages believers on an emotional level, connecting hearts and minds to God.
  • For many of us, singing provides us an outlet for expressing emotions that our words alone cannot capture, serving as a form of prayer when our speech fails.

As a Biblical practice

  • The Bible contains numerous commands and examples of God's people singing, establishing a pattern of communal worship through song.
  • Singing helps people remain focused on the present moment, allowing for enjoyment and a deeper connection with God.

What are you missing out on when you do not sing along with others in church?

And since others do not sing in church, and others prefer to attend a service of the word, let’s meet here again next week when I explore the reasons why people do not like to sing in church.
