Signing Up For Sunday Flowers

Thank you so much to Tony Allport and his team who worked at sprucing up the Remembrance Corner that houses the Memorial Garden Plaques and the Flower Signing Up Board. Whilst all this has been looking impressive, the Flower Signing Up has not kept up. Please consider signing up for supplying the Sunday Services flowers by donating $55.00 in memory of a loved one, or to mark a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary. Please mark your monetary donation "Altar Flowers" to cover the cost. The $55.00 covers for 2 arrangements.

Putting on Christ – Vesting Prayers and Dressing Prayers

Last week Rev. Monte described the prayers that are used in the vestry as the priest prepares and vests in preparation for presiding at the Eucharist. There is a reason and a corresponding prayer for each article of clothing that is worn. It is a way of putting on Christ to remind us of who we are both disciples of Christ and leaders in the church as we prepare to lead other disciples in worship. It is sacred preparation.

Though it may seem as something the priest does on their own, I can remember at the age of 13 or 14, as a server, being in the vestry with the priest as he recited the prayers aloud. I joined him in the prayers and these prepared me to fulfill my role as server each and every time I was on (which was just about every Sunday). It was a way to pray to be open to God for that hour of holiness, worship, listening, prayerfulness, and getting ready for the week ahead. It was about preparing to put our best selves before God and one another in our gathered community. There were also prayers for the choir, and indeed the whole ‘worship team’ for that Sunday before the procession and gathering hymn. We were ready.

As I read that article last week, these memories all came back to me and I thought about how I prepare to live my life each day by putting on Christ.

As followers and disciples of Jesus we are meant to put on Christ each day, not only in preparation for worship but for whatever lays before us. Each and every morning each of us is greeted by the morning light as we rise from our sleep. It beckons us to prepare for the day ahead. Each of us will have a variety of undertakings for work, school, daily chores, volunteering, shopping, gathering with friends and so many other things. We will often ask ourselves the question, ‘What will I wear today?’, go to the closet and dresser drawer and make our choices based on what we have on our agenda for the day. Do I have a meeting at attend? Am I going to do yard work? Am I going to a medical appointment? Am I heading to classes? Am I just going to laze around and drink tea? Each of us will want to dress appropriately for the agenda. Sometimes the choices are easy if we are simply visiting friends. Sometimes harder, if we are dressing for a job interview. We may put a lot of thought into choices, so much so we might even lay our clothes out the night before, having thought ahead. The clothing we wear and how we wear it makes a statement about who we are and how we think about ourselves. In fact, some places and events let those know there are expectations of attire. It may be formal, semi-formal, smart, smart casual, casual, and so on. Most people will make the effort to dress appropriately to the occasion.

When I think then about all these different ways to get dressed and ready for my day ahead. The first thing I must do is put on Christ. Will those with whom I share parts of the day see beyond the clothing I wear to who I truly am as a child of God, as a disciple of Christ, as someone who wants to lovingly and compassionately engage with everyone I meet, to listen closely as I walk alongside others in all the relationships I have with those around me, even with all of creation.

For me, this is putting on Christ and really needs to be my first decision of the day. How shall I wear Christ today? Will the way of Christ be evident in me today? Will I honour Christ by honouring others in the conversations I have, and actions I take this day. It is only then that I can dress with clothing appropriate for the day ahead.

May there be blessings for all our days from the rising of the sun to its setting.

Rev. Steve
